Despite the fact that my mate was currently clinging to me, I still couldn’t believe that it was her.
It had to be some damage from the explosion or the fight that just happened a few minutes ago. My mate couldn’t be here because I’d locked her in the room to keep her safe.
“You’re alive,” she whispered, her voice cracking. “I kept trying to reach
you,
but you
wouldn’t-”
She pulled back, and then to my shock, she slapped me hard across the face.
Shocked gasps filled the air and a few of my men whispered between themselves, but no one dared to step in, they knew
better.
“Don’t ever block me out like that again!” she hissed. “I thought you were dead! I did everything to reach you. I called Scarlett, I tried Damien and I-”
Tangling one hand into her hair, I pulled her down for a kiss. She protested at first, trying to speak, but I merely kissed her harder. She relaxed after a minute and kissed me back, her hands grabbing my shirt tightly as if terrified I’d leave.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered after I broke the kiss. “We got your warning. One of the guards saw the text on my phone and rushed to tell us. We barely managed to get away from the front doors before the house exploded.”
The feeling of fear and panic hadn’t left me completely.
I remember how I felt when the guard told me of the message. My first thought was that I’d led my men to a slaughter, and that we wouldn’t be able to return.
The front door blew open, wounding a few of our men, and the hunters were upon us immediately. It was a fucking bloodbath, and it didn’t help that most of us were temporarily blinded from the dust and the debris.
It was a fucking miracle that the damned hunters didn’t know how to kill lycans, or we’d all be dead.
“I’m hard to kill, princess, remember?” I teased and she smacked my chest.
“That’s not something to joke about,” she snapped. “Sooner or later, they’ll realize that they can’t kill you like they do the others. They’ll research and they will find a way.”
I brushed her hair back, cringing when I saw the streak of blood I’d left in my wake.
Seeing her right now just reminded me of exactly why I wanted to lock her up in the first place. She was pure innocence, and I was bathed in blood.
“You should go,” I told her softly, pulling back. “We don’t know if there are any more surprises waiting for us and you can’t be caught in the middle of-”
“You should know better than to try to send me away now, Kai,” she said, crossing her arms over her chest. “I’m not going anywhere. We have to find those kids.”
“We don’t even know where they are. They could have-”
“I found something!”
Daisy didn’t even wait for me to speak before she dashed into the house.
Murmuring a curse under my breath, I followed behind her.
The guards seemed surprised to see her, but no one said a word as she weaved through them, following the sound of

Damien’s voice.
It led us towards a room at the back of the warehouse.
“Daisy?” Damien asked, surprised. “How did you get here?”
“Later,” she waved him off. “What did you find?”

He glanced at me, a silent question in his eyes and I nodded. She was already here, there was no use trying to hide anything from her anymore.
Damien gestured for us to follow him.
He led us to one corner of the room where a bunch of boxes sat. They’d moved some of them and revealed a trap door.
“We haven’t opened it yet,” he said. “We don’t know what to expect.”
I turned to a guard. “Keep my mate close to the door. If there’s danger, take her and go.”
“Kai! No!”
I ignored her screaming as the guards dragged her away from the trap door. If someone were to jump out at us, I wanted to
make sure she was safe.
Turning back to Damien, I nodded.
Together with the guards next to him, they pulled open the trap door.
There weren’t any immediate gun shots or screams of war, so I nodded again. One of the guards climbed the stairs going down. He held a torch in his hands and did a quick search. Whatever he saw there must have surprised him because he cursed loudly.
“They’re here,” he said softly. “Fucking hell. We found the kids.”
I descended the steps immediately and my heart fucking shattered when I saw the children huddled into different corners of the little room. They were chained to the wall, and from the looks of it, the chains were silver.
“I’m Kai,” I said softly, holding my hands up to show I meant no harm. “We’re here to help you.”
They didn’t speak.
The chains were easy to break. The silver burned a little, but I knew it was nothing compared to what the children were feeling.
Most of them could barely stand and had to be carried out, but a few of the older ones were defiant and refused to let us
touch them.
