Chapter 104
Chapter 104
I’d memorized the faces of all the children.
I spent hours staring at those pictures, so it was expected.

The boy missing had short hair. I think it was black, but I couldn’t be sure, because in the picture he was so dirty that his hair had taken the color of lint and dust. His eyes were dark and sunken, there was no sign of hope in them.
“I need to ask the kids if they’ve seen him,” I told Kai. “Maybe they know what has happened to him.”
“The children are already on their way to the pack, Daisy, and we need to go too. The boy isn’t here.”
I shook my head. “He has to be. His picture was there.”
I made to leave but Kai grabbed my arm and pulled me to a stop.
“We have checked every inch of this place. This is the only trap door. If that boy wasn’t here, then there is nothing we can do. We have to go before the hunters send more people.”
I wanted to protest, but Kai was seemingly tired of arguing with me because he picked me up by my waist and threw me over his shoulder unceremoniously. He barked out orders to his guards, ignoring my protests.
No one blinked at the way he carried me and I quickly realized that I wasn’t going to win this fight, so I stopped kicking and screaming.
Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough for Kai to let me go. His hold on me loosened a little, but he didn’t put me down.
“Thank you for your help,” Kai said to Darla.
I thought she’d have left by now, but she was standing outside with the other guards.
“It’s no problem, let’s just not make it a habit, okay?” she said with a half-smile. Her eyes met mine. “Well, this isn’t a bad way to end the night.”
My cheeks tinged pink. “You were a great help, Darla. I can’t even begin to tell you-”
She waved me off. “Water under the bridge. Don’t be a stranger, okay?”
I nodded. “I won’t.”
With one last smile at me, she turned on her heels and headed back to her car.
Kai carried me towards the car and placed me in the passenger seat. I crossed my arms over my chest with a huff as he buckled me in like a child. He didn’t drive away immediately though. He waited until every last guard had gotten into their
car before he started his.
For the first thirty minutes, we drove in complete silence.
He drove much faster than he did before, and he kept glancing at the rearview mirror.
“Where is Damien?” I asked. “He drove with us when we came.”
“He’s with the other guards,” he said simply, his voice methodical and cool.
I knew he was pissed, but I also had a right to be as well. He’d treated me like a child all day.
“What do
you
think-”

“For fucks sake, Daisy,” he snapped. “Stop asking questions. I’m trying not to be mad at you right now.”
I frowned, crossing my arms over my chest. “You’re not the only one upset, Kai.”

“What could you possibly have to be upset about? That I locked you in the inn and asked the guards to keep you away? What the fuck did you think was going to happen? You aren’t just a nobody anymore, you’re fucking Queen. You can’t act like your life doesn’t matter anymore because it does.”
“I didn’t-” I began to protest but he cut me off.
“You don’t just run into a battle like that. You aren’t trained for it. I don’t care how much emotion you have, but it won’t do shit when you are confronted with a weapon. Plus, you’re a wolf, you’re not fucking indestructible, Daisy.”
I leaned back into my seat, shame coating the inside of my mouth. “I know I’m not.”
*Then act like it! I can’t spend every waking moment worrying about you, okay? You need to learn which battles you fight and which ones you outsource. You need to know when to call it fucking quits. I know you want to save all the children, but we saved sixteen of them. So what if we missed one?”
“Don’t say that, Kai. That is someone’s child. They have a family that loves them and-”
“What is your fucking obsession with the child anyway? Everyone comes from a family, even the hunter who is trying to kill us. He didn’t drop from the sky and-”
“I’m late!”
He went deathly still.
I hadn’t said it out loud to anyone, mostly because I was trying to see if it would come by itself. It wouldn’t be the first time I’d been late in my life, but this was the first time there was any real fear of getting pregnant.
I wanted a family, more than anything, but this wasn’t the right time. With everything going on, having a child right now would complicate things. It was one more thing the hunter could use to hurt or threaten us. One more advantage that he had over us.
Kai swallowed deeply, pulling the car to a harsh stop.
“Kai, what are you-”
“How late?”
“Kai-”
“Answer me, Daisy,” he cut me off. “How late are you and how long have you known?”
I glanced down at my hands. “I’ve known a few days. Just before we found out about the pictures.”
He ran his fingers through his hair with a curse. “Why didn’t you tell me? You could’ve taken a test. I wouldn’t have risked letting you come here-”
“And that’s exactly why I didn’t tell you!” I screamed. “I didn’t want you to wrap me up in bubble wrap and keep me in the palace like a prized trophy. I don’t even know if I’m pregnant.”
