Chapter 106

Chapter 106

I didn’t bother calling Damien because chances were that he was also asleep.

I got lost twice on the way to the council house, but ultimately, I found my way there. There were more guards situated outside than the last time. I figured it was because of the last attack they had.

The guards bowed as I drove in and a young boy in grey robes led me through the halls and through a pair of double doors.

The council members were seated at a round table, their hands neatly folded in front of them. For a moment, I was caught off guard because I’d never seen all of them together before. They were truly a terrifying and formidable cause.

“You are Queen,” my wolf snapped. “Pull yourself together. They bow to you.”

I squared my shoulders and met their gazes. I refused to cower, and after a tense three seconds, they all rose and bowed low.

“Shall we start?” I asked, crossing the length of the room and taking the seat at the end of the table which was left untouched.

I saw a few of them frown as I sat down. It was clear the seat was reserved for Kai, and they weren’t pleased to see a woman there.

“We were expecting the Alpha,” one of them said. “Will he be joining us?”

“No, I’ll be handling this meeting today. Unless you have a problem with that?”

To my right, I saw Alaric smile as the old man spluttered and stumbled over his words.

“Of course not, your majesty. We are more than happy to have you here.”

He quickly turned away from me, his cheeks turning red with embarrassment.

I waited a minute before speaking, wanting to make sure that no one else had anything to say before turning to Alaric.

“You’ll have to update me on the reason for this meeting. I wasn’t able to get all the details from Kai before I left.”

“Of course, your majesty.” He looked at the others, but when he realized that no one was speaking, he continued. “We are… worried in regards to this war. Is it truly the smart choice?”

“What do you mean?”

“As the Queen, you are to do what is best for the entire werewolf kingdom, and not just one pack. These hunters have been an issue, but for the most part, they have stayed away from us and handled rogues. We are worried that if you continue down this path, they will turn their attention to the packs. We don’t know their numbers or their strengths, they could pose at dangerous threat.”

“Do they not already pose a threat?” I asked. “They left the head of a child at our doorstep. Was that not enough of a threat? They want to take over the Northern pack as well. What makes you think they will stop there? What is stopping them from moving to another pack?”

“There is no evidence to state they will do that,” another member injected. “I think we should give them what they want and get out of their hair. They will retaliate for the children that were taken. We were not consulted before that mission happened or else-”

“Are you suggesting we should have left those kids?” I asked.

No one spoke, but it was clear some of them agreed with him.

I couldn’t believe it.

Chapter 106

55 Voublers

It was no wonder Kai didn’t want me to handle the meeting. I was one wrong word away from losing my shit. I refused to believe that a grown adult could say something like that.

“They are children.” I hissed out. “Surely you aren’t suggesting that their lives are worth nothing.”

“Quite the contrary actually. Their lives are worth a lot, but not worth the rest of the world.”

“These hunters are a problem that need to be dealt with. They may not seem like a big enough issue now, but they will be someday. You may be dead and gone by then, but someone will have to deal with them.”

He rolled his eyes. “This is why I prefer to speak to the King. He would understand. You are being too emotional about this.”

I raised a brow. “Excuse me?”

“It’s no secret that you women lead with your heart. Of course you would be concerned about a handful of children. We are talking about an entire pack here.”

“You are out of line, councilor,” Alaric warned, but I held up a hand to stop me.

“You can have your reservations about me, councilor, but as it stands, I am Queen and you are not. It is your duty to ensure the smooth running of the kingdom, and so far, I have not done anything to jeopardize this kingdom. If anything, we are trying to rid us of a blight, and not pretend it doesn’t exist.”

I rose to my feet.

“Now unless there is anything else, I am done here.”

No one spoke.

They wouldn’t even meet my eyes.

Once I was sure I’d gotten my point across, I headed for the doors.

My hands touched the doorknob when I turned back and glanced at the councilor who had spoken.

“One more thing, councilor,” I said and he looked up at me. “You will never speak to me in that manner again.”

His jaw clenched. “I didn’t mean to offend-”

“Yes, you did. For whatever reason, you consider me worthy of less respect than Kai. You are entitled to your opinions, but you will never disrespect me again. Are we clear?”

He nodded, his cheeks a bright shade of red. “Crystal.”

I walked out of the room without another word.

The same boy from earlier led me through the halls when I heard someone calling out to me from behind.

I turned and found Alaric running after me.

“I can take it from here,” he told the boy. “Come with me, your majesty.”
