I had a shit ton of work to do, but lying in bed with Daisy’s scent in my nose seemed like a more enjoyable alternative.

I leaned forward to press a kiss to her forehead, but my lips touched something soft… too soft and smooth to be hair. I opened my eyes slowly and cursed when I realized the bed was empty and cold.

I sat up instantly, looking around, but it was clear she was gone. She’d been gone for a while from the looks of things, and she left me with her pillow to keep me asleep. It was a smart move on her part, that much was certain.

A glance at the clock told me it was already after noon and I cursed, rushing to my feet. I couldn’t believe I’d slept that much. What was even more unbelievable was that no one had tried to call me.

I found my phone on the dresser and quickly realized why.

I had a lot of messages from Damien and Alaric, but someone had put my phone on silent.

I dialed Damien first and he picked up on the second ring.

“I thought you’d still be asleep by now,” he said, his voice laced with amusement. “Your mate found me in the office and told me she’d cut off my balls if I woke you up.”

If I wasn’t so stressed, I would have laughed. “Where is she now?”

“Standing five feet in front of me. We just finished meeting with the generals.”

“And the council?”

“She did all that on her own actually. According to Alaric, she did a pretty good job and she got the councilors talking.”

“Fuck, I’m on my way.”

I’ve never dressed so fast in my life, and I must have broken every traffic rule possible just to get to the office in time.

Daisy was standing outside talking to Damien when I arrived. She looked radiant in her short yellow dress and heels. Her hair was tied up into a high ponytail and her eyes widened in surprise when she saw me.

“Kai!” she exclaimed as I got closer. “Before you get mad, I need you to know that you looked like death when you walked in this morning and I did what I thought was-”

I cut her off with a kiss.

A surprised gasp left her but she quickly kissed me back, hands gripping onto my biceps for support.

“You conned me,” I whispered against her lips. “You said you’d wake nie up in an hour.”

“Technically, I never agreed. You asked me to.”

I shook my head, not bothering to hide my smile. “We’ll talk about this later. What else is on my schedule?”

“I’ve done all the important meetings. We still have to talk with Scarlett, but before we do that, I was wondering if we could maybe see the children.” She peered up at me through her lashes as she spoke. “I want to see if any of them are up for answering questions.”

I knew she wasn’t going to let that one child go anytime soon, so I nodded. After everything she’d already done this morning, she deserved the opportunity to do what she wanted.

I took the children to a private hospital and made sure they had an entire ward to themselves.

After all they’d been through, the odds of them trauma bonding together were high, and I couldn’t risk separating any of them. They were all in separate beds, but close enough that they could reach out and hold each other.

However, as we walked into the room, it was clear the kids had done what they wanted. They’d somehow pushed all the beds together and they in a huddle, holding hands. Their eyes widened as we approached, and I saw the older ones regard us with distrust.

“You should all be in your beds,” the nurse chided but I held up a hand to stop her. “But Alpha, they’ve pulled out their IV’s and-”

“It’s fine, leave us,” I instructed.

Her mouth dropped open in shock, but she nodded and left the room.

For a minute, Daisy and I just watched them. It was clear she was observing me just as I was.

“Hello, I’m Daisy,” she said finally, taking a step forward. “This is Kai, he’s my mate. How are you all feeling?”

It was subtle, but all the kids glanced at an older boy, as if silently asking his permission. It was clear that if we wanted any answers, we would have to go through him.

“What do you want with us?” the boy asked, his hands crossed over his chest. “Why did you bring us here?”

“We’re going to help you find your families.”

He snorted. “Our families don’t want us. They left us to die.”
