Kai’s explanation seemed to ease the kids a little, but it was clear they were still distrustful and I didn’t blame them.
“Would you like breakfast?” I asked and a few of the younger kids nodded, but the older boy kept his jaw squared shut.
“We already had the hospital crap,” he murmured. “We don’t want any more of it.”
“Well, what do you want then?”
The boy raised a brow. “I can have anything I want?”
I nodded. “Just say the name.”
Pancakes!” he blurted out.
It was clear he didn’t mean to say it because he immediately clamped his mouth shut and looked away.
“How does pancakes and bacon sound?” I offered.
He turned to me slowly. “Whatever.”
“It’s going to be hard to win their trust,” I said to Kai down our mind link.
“That’s not surprising. Who knows how long they were kept there and tortured. They probably lost all hope of being rescued.”
“Can we get them pancakes though?”
“Give me thirty minutes. They’ll have all the pancakes their little hearts desire.”
I took a seat on one of the other beds while Kai left and sure enough, he returned in thirty minutes with three women pulling in trays of pancakes.
The children gasped, some even clapped as the plates were placed in their hands. Even the older boy cracked a smile as he took a bite.
“It tastes better than the hospital crap,” he muttered before adding. “Thank you.”
“It’s nothing,” I waved him off. “What’s your

name?”
“Can I talk to you for a minute, Evan?” I asked. “Maybe away from the others?”
He was clearly hesitant but he nodded.
I didn’t take him far, just two beds over so the other children wouldn’t be privy to our conversation, but we were still close enough that Kafcould listen in.
“How long had you been with the hunters, Evan?”
He shrugged. “It was dark. I don’t know. It feels like it’s been years.”
“How old are you?”
“Twelve… Thirteen? I don’t know. My birthday is in May. My mum had planned a big party for me because I was going to get my wolf. I was going to invite all my friends. It was a month to my birthday when they took me.”

Chapter 108
May was over five months a
ago.
He’d been with them for six months.
It was no wonder he looked so gaunt and tired.
“Were you the first?”
12 56 dugtret?
He nodded. “I saw them bring in everyone.” His eyes welled with tears. “They said our parents told them to take us. That we were monsters. Is that true?”
“I would hope not. Do you remember what pack you’re from? I can help you find your parents. I can’t imagine any mother willingly letting her son get taken.”
“How do you know?” he snapped suddenly. “Do you have a son?”
Kai took a step towards me, but I gently shook my head.
The boy wouldn’t hurt me, I knew that much. He was scared, and hurt, and he was lashing out.
“No, I don’t have a son, but I might be pregnant.”
“Might be?” he asked and I nodded.
“I haven’t checked. I’m scared to find out. Do you want to know why?” he nodded. “Because I’m terrified of these hunters hurting my child. That is how I know that there is no way your mother sold you out to them.”
His shoulders sagged a little and he shoved a piece of bacon in his mouth.
“What about your dad?” I asked and he shrugged.
“He’s human. He can’t help me.”
I turned to Kai, wondering if he’d heard the confession, and it was clear he did because he looked exactly how I felt.
It was almost unheard of for werewolves and humans to procreate together. We tried to keep our world away from the human world. It was one of our cardinal rules.
“What pack are you from?” I asked quietly.
“Do you promise to find my mum?”
I nodded. “I swear it.”
“I’m from the Northern pack.”
That made things easier for us. Scarlett would be able to find his mother within a day.
I had no idea if it would be as easy for the other children, but I decided to wait until later to ask. They looked so happy munching on their pancakes that I couldn’t imagine disturbing that.
“I just have one more question and I’m done, okay Evan?”
He nodded. “Okay.”
I took out my phone and scrolled until I found the picture of the boy we hadn’t found.
“Do you know him?” I asked. “You said you were the first taken. Did you seen them take this boy anywhere? He wasn’t with
you.”

Chapter 108
Evan stared at the picture for what felt like hours before shaking his head. “I’ve never seen this boy before.”
“Are you sure? We found his picture with yours. We assumed he was one of you?”
“I’m sorry, I don’t know him. Can I have my breakfast now?”
I nodded, shoving my phone back into my pocket. “Of course.”
Running my hands down my face with a sigh, I made my way over to Kai.

“This doesn’t make any sense,” I whispered. “How can he say he’s never seen this child? What was the picture doing there? What does it have to do with the hunters?”
“I don’t know,” he sighed deeply.
“It’s like the more answers we get, the more questions we’re left with.”
His wrapped an arm around my shoulder and squeezed firmly. “We found these kinds, and for now, that has to be enough.”
“But there’s one more child-”
“I know,” he cut me off. “But there is nothing we can do about it now. We have sixteen children who need to find their families. We have to figure out how we’re going to do it. They may not all be from the Northern pack. We can’t search in the packs without the express consent of the Alphas.”
I exhaled deeply. “So we have to inform the other packs about the hunters.” He nodded. “I don’t imagine they’ll take it well.”
He chuckled. “Welcome to politics, princess. You’re about to see exactly why I hate being King.”
