We waited until the children were fed before we began asking them questions about their homes.

Thankfully, they were all able to give us direct answers. The youngest of them was six, and even she was able to tell us her mother’s name as well as the pack she was from, but what was more surprising was that they were all hybrids.

They all had one parent who was human, and the other was a wolf.

“It doesn’t make sense,” I told Kai as we left the hospital ward. “Why would he only take hybrids? If he hates werewolves so much then why not take actual wolves?”

“Maybe they’re too strong for him to control?” he suggested but I shook my head.

That couldn’t be it.

“Werewolf children are like humans until they turn thirteen and get their wolves.”

“Really?” he asked and I nodded.

“They can’t shift, they don’t heal as fast, they don’t have super strength or super vision. Isn’t it the same for lycan children?”

He shook his head. “They don’t get into their full strength until they hit thirteen, but before then, they are much stronger than human kids. But back to the hunter, he could have taken normal wolf kids.”

“Exactly. There has to be a reason he’s fascinated with hybrids. I didn’t even know there were so many hybrids. There has to be a way he is finding them.”

“I think the Alphas may be able to help us more with that. I’ll send out the invitations today. They should arrive at the pack by tomorrow evening.”

I stopped in my tracks. “You want to have the meeting here?”

“Of course. I don’t trust them enough to have it in their pack, and the hunters may attack neutral ground. I’ll inform them of the threat. They will protect their pack before coming and arrive with enough guards to keep them safe.”

The more he spoke, the more I realized that this was quickly fleshing out into a real war. I didn’t want to believe it at first, but now with the involvement of the other Alpha’s, it was going to go to shit very quickly.

“We’ll bring this to an end,” he promised, lips brushing my forehead. “The other Alphas will be of no harm to you.”

“It’s not them I’m worried about.”

He pulled back, watching me with wary eyes. “Go home, Daisy. You’ve had a long day. Damien will take you.”

For once, I didn’t argue.

I quietly walked over to the car where Damien was already waiting. He was all smiles, trying to crack a joke here and there, but I was in no mood to respond. There were greater things on my mind.

“Can we stop at a pharmacy?” I asked suddenly. “I need to get something.”

“Are you alright?” he sounded genuinely concerned. “We’re in a hospital. I’m sure one of the doctors will be more than happy to-”

“A pharmacy please, or even a supermarket.”

He nodded. “Of course.”

“When we get there, I’m going to need you to go in please. If they see me, they’re going to whisper.”

“What is this about, Daisy?”

“I need a pregnancy test.”

Damien didn’t ask any more questions after that. He simply drove to the pharmacy and returned with a plastic bag holding three different tests.

“Do you want me to stay with you?” he asked once we’d arrived at the house. “You seem nervous. I don’t know if I’ll be of much help, but I can offer emotional support.”

My lips quirked. “You sound more nervous than I feel, Damien.”

“Well of course I’m fucking nervous. You could be carrying a baby-Kai’s baby. My god baby.”

I snorted. “Who says you’re going to be godfather?”

“Because there’s no one better equipped for the role,” he said simply, crossing his arms over his chest. “Do you want me to

call Kai?”

I mulled over his words for a minute.

This was something I would have loved to do with Kai, but I couldn’t. I had to do it myself. I’d held it in for over a week, and I couldn’t wait one more second before finding out.

“I’d like it if you stayed with me,” I said finally.

I didn’t make it into the my bathroom.

I used the guest toilet and left all three tests on the sink without looking at them.

Once my hands were clean, I headed into the kitchen, grabbed a bowl and began to pour some butter into it.

“What are you doing?” Damien asked. “Is this some kind of crisis? Do I need to do a intervention?”

“No, Damien, you don’t.”

“Is this joy because you’re not pregnant?”

I fought the urge to roll my eyes. “I don’t know if I am or not. The test needs five minutes before it displays.”

“I’m sure five minutes will go by before you finish doing whatever it is that you’re doing in here.”

He was probably right, but I didn’t care to respond.

Whatever bravado I had earlier had disappeared, and right now, I was filled with fear. What if I was pregnant? What would happen then? Would I have to take a back seat in all of this? Would I be resigned to a trophy wife who just bore children for the palace?

“Daisy?” Damien called out, his voice soft. “What is going on? Talk to me.”

I sighed, dropping the bowl. “He’s going to want to protect me if I’m pregnant.”
