Chapter 110
I was exhausted when I finally walked into the house.

I’d spent the whole day making sure the letters were sent out to the other Alpha’s and that the children were well cared for and catered to.
They seemed to be loosening up a little. A few of the younger ones were bold enough to ask for certain foods or ice cream, and even Evan wasn’t as cold to the nurses as he was when they first arrived.
There was still no update on the missing child from the photos, but I’d put it at the back of my mind.
“We need to talk,” Daisy said as soon as I walked in through the front doors.
Flet out an exhausted sigh, but nodded. There was a lot of tension brewing between us and it was important that we handled it before it got dangerously out of hand. I would have preferred to have it another day, but there was no better time than the
present.
“I think that’s my cue to leave,” Damien drawled from his spot on the couch. He brushed past me and patted me gently on the back. “Good luck.”
I heard the door slam shut behind him, but I didn’t break my gaze from Daisy.
She’d changed out of her dress from earlier and was now wearing one of my oversized shirts and a pair of shorts that were barely visible. Her hands were crossed over her chest, but I could tell it wasn’t defensive, it was almost as if she was trying to shrink herself from view.
“I don’t like it when you try to lock me up,” she said softly.
“That’s not what I’m-”
She shut her eyes tightly. “Let me finish, Kai, please.
I nodded slowly. “I won’t interrupt, I promise.”
She exhaled deeply and gestured for me to take a seat.
Standing or sitting, it made no difference to me, but it seemed important to her, so I let it slide and sat down. She hesitated for a moment before sitting next to me, her hands folded neatly in her lap,
“I want to be useful. I don’t want to be another trophy mate on a shelf. I don’t want you to hide me from a battle because you think I’m a woman and I shouldn’t be there, I want to be involved, and I mean hands-on. I understand that it is your instinct to protect me, and maybe I run into battles without thinking, but we need to be a team, Kai. I can’t do this if we aren’t. I’m done now,”
I turned to face her. For a second, we locked eyes, and she quickly looked away.
I could have forced her to look at me, but that wasn’t necessary at the moment. She was obviously uncomfortable enough as it was, and I didn’t want to make it any harder for her than it needed to be.
“I don’t hide you away because you’re a woman, Daisy. I try to keep you safe because you’re my mate, and if anything were to happen to you, the whole world would feel my wrath. I’m not a wolf, I won’t get upset and calm down if my mate is hurt, I will lose sight of the difference between friend and foe, and I will burn everything in my path until I am put down.”
She inhaled sharply, but didn’t speak, so I continued.
“It is protocol in the palace that if there is a threat, the Queen be carted off to safety because if she were to be hurt…” I trailed off, not wanting to think about it. “It would be disastrous, Daisy. I can try to not be so rigid about things, but I cannot

promise to stop trying to protect you.”
She stayed silent before sighing. “Okay.”
“Is there anything else?” I asked but she shook her head.
Somehow, I didn’t believe her.

Daisy wouldn’t make me sit for a conversation if there wasn’t more to say, and it didn’t help that her wall was firmly in place, hiding her major emotions and thoughts from me.
“Are you sure?”
She nodded and smiled. “It’s been a long day, don’t you think? Tomorrow will be equally long, we have to welcome a bunch of Alphas, and according to Damien, we have to be there.”
“We don’t. A representation of the palace does, and that will be Damien himself.”
“Does that mean we can sleep in?” she asked, eyes wide and hopeful.
No, it didn’t, but she seemed so pleased by the idea that I couldn’t help but nod.
I told myself I’d never lie to her, but I didn’t consider this a lie. I’d ensure she was able to sleep in. I’d handle everything else.
“Thank the goddess,” she groaned, flopping backwards dramatically. “This means we can watch a movie all night. I made dinner and-”
“We could do that,” I began slowly, pulling her towards me. “Or we could do something more fun.”
Her breathing picked up, and her cheeks flushed slightly. “Like what?”
