Whoever hurt her did a real number on her because I couldn’t understand how revenge was on her mind right now when she could’ve gotten hurt.
She stood a few feet away from me… well within arm’s reach, but couldn’t touch her. It was the most infuriating part about this deal we had. I wanted to hold her close, to make sure she wasn’t hurt, but I couldn’t for fear of her running away.
For now, the sight of her had to be enough.
“What did the counsellor want to talk about?” she asked, snapping me out of my thoughts.
It took me a second to remember what she was talking about, and I was grateful for the distraction because it gave me something to think about that wasn’t the possibility of her being hurt.
“It’s nothing important,” I waved her off.
A flash of worry and disappointment crossed her face, but it was gone before I had the chance to analyze it.
“Are you sure? It didn’t sound like nothing.” She crossed her arm over her chest defensively. “What aren’t you telling me?” There was something about her stance; the way she hugged herself tighter and stepped back from me. It was almost as if she was trying to shield herself. I couldn’t understand why. I was investigating her pack, not her… unless-
“Is there something I’m not supposed to know?”
She frowned. “You’re evading my question.”
“And you’re evading mine. What is this about, Daisy?”
She didn’t answer me, instead, she turned to stare at the bookshelf.
I took a step towards her and she took one back, until her back hit the wall behind her. A sharp gasp left her throat, but she was too prideful to turn around and leave, instead, she held out a hand, stopping me mere inches away from her.
“Personal space.” I was sure she intended it to be a scolding, but instead, it came out breathless. “I want to leave.”
“The door is right behind you.”
She sighed deeply. “You’re being difficult, Kai, just tell me what he told you.”
“Why?” I asked, grabbing her chin until she was staring at me. “What is so terrible that you don’t want me to find out?”
She chewed on the inside of her cheek, refusing to speak, her eyes firm and her jaw set, and that was when I saw it. Underneath all her bravado was fear. I’d only seen that type of fear once, and it was the night I found her in the forest.
Whatever this was, it was about that night, and I was an asshole to dangle it over her head like this.
“The Beta of your pack was spotted meeting with some hunters a human settlement,” I said, explaining the news Alaric had given to me. “It had nothing to do with you.”
Her eyes widened in shock. “That can’t be true.”
“It is, there is evidence.”
“I’d like to see it.” She crossed her arms over her chest in defiance “The Beta would never be involved in something like
that.”

I raised a brow at her words, but she wasn’t backing down. She stared at me blankly, waiting for me to move. Her defense of him would’ve annoyed me, if I didn’t know that the Beta was me than twice her age
“Why do you care so much?” I asked but she remained silent. “Do you know him personally?”
“I lived in that pack, of course I knew him.”
I shook my head. “You’re too defensive to have known him passively. Were you related?”
There was a flash in her eyes, and it hit me.
“He’s your father.”
Silence.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she mumbled, but her voice shook.
“I’m not stupid, Daisy. You can’t lie to me.”
“You know what? Forget it. I don’t even know why I’m talking to you-” She attempted to leave, but I grabbed her arm, pulling her to a stop. “Let me go.”
“You don’t just walk away from a conversation when you don’t like it.”
“Yes, I do.” She jerked her hand out of my grip. “Are you going to show me the proof or not?”
I knew it wouldn’t change anything.
I knew firsthand how hard it was to believe that someone you trusted and looked up to was not the good person you thought they were. However, she deserved to see that clip, because I was taking that entire pack down, her father included, and she deserved to know why.
I gestured for her to come with me, heading over to the table and pulled open my laptop. She hesitated for a moment before following behind me, mumbling some choice words under her breath.
She kept a bit of a distance between us, and I tried to ignore it as I pulled up the video. It was grainy and zoomed in, but the Beta’s features were clear. He was seen inside a restaurant with the hunters. Their faces were as clear as day.
They were elusive. In fact, this was the first video of them in over two months.
“It could be doctored,” she argued.
“It’s not. Alaric checked before he brought it over to me. It’s legit!
“He was probably blackmailed or something. He would never do this. He hates the hunters, even more than he hates-” she trailed off, catching herself before she finished her sentence. “It doesn’t matter anyway, you won’t believe me.”
