Chapter 111

J

I’d lied to Kai more times in one night than I had in my entire life.

The lies were compounding, and with each new one, it felt like someone was tightening a noose around my throat. Kai would find out, he eventually always did, and when that time came, I knew that nothing would be able to save me.

It was one thing to lie about casual things, and it was another entirely to hide the fact that I was carrying his child.

The two pink lines from the pregnancy test haunted me. I’d only glanced at them for a second before panicking instantly. Damien had to snatch it out of my hands and wrap his arms around my shoulders to calm me.

It wasn’t just the hunters, it was everything. I’d always wanted a family of my own; a mate and children, but now that it felt real, I was fucking terrified. Would I be a good mother? Would I be able to protect my child or would I be just like my father?

“What’s on your mind?” Kai asked, brushing his hair back from my shoulder before pulling me closer into his chest.

I felt his lips, warming and soft against my skin.

“You’ve been quiet all night. Is something bothering you?”

“No, I’m just thinking.”

The darkness in the room made it easy for me to hide my expressions. I could lie with my lips, but my face could never lie to Kai.

His hands were at my hips and in a second, he turned me to face him. I could make out his eyes and the slight furrow of his brows as he looked over me, his gaze concerned and worried.

“Princess, something has been bothering you all night. You know you can talk to me, right? I let it slide earlier, but it’s almost midnight and you’re still awake.”

“I’m just thinking about the child we didn’t find.”

It was an easy lie because it wasn’t a complete lie. I was worried about the child/something told me he was important. There were only two people who could tell us who he was. One was dead, and the other wanted to kill us.

He sighed. “Princess-”

“I’ll be fine, I promise.” I smoothed out the crinkles in his forehead. “You should sleep.”

“So should you.”

I made a show of nestling closer to him and burying my face into his chest. His chest rumbled as he laughed, but he wrapped his arms around me and pressed a kiss to my forehead.

Neither of us spoke again, and eventually his breathing evened out, but sleep refused to come for me.

I must have slept sometime in the early hours of the morning because I awoke to the smell of freshly squeezed orange juice and grease.

Kai stood at the edge of the bed in a bright pink apron I’d bought for myself. He looked absolutely ridiculous in it, but he somehow managed to pull it off.

“I think yesterday was a lot on you, so I brought you breakfast,” he said, placing the tray in front of me. “The Alphas will be arriving from noon.”

My brows rose. “So early?”

“A lot of them left as soon as they received the letters. It isn’t often that we send out letters to the packs. They’re–”

“Curious?” I asked.

He nodded. “And scared, although they won’t dare to admit it out loud.”

It wasn’t surprising, Alphas were some of the proudest beings to exist.

“Eat up,” he said softly. “I have a gift for you.”

My eyes widened at that. “Any hints?”

He walked away, a small smile playing on his lips. “Nope.”

I wasn’t ashamed to say that I practically wolfed down my food and got freshened up. The allure of a gift was more than enough to pull me out of bed.

Once I was dressed, I headed down the stairs to find Kai.

“I’m ready!” I announced. “Where is this gift? Can you give me anymore hints about it?”

There was no response from Kai. In fact, I didn’t hear any sounds at all. It was as if he’d disappeared into thin air.

“Kai! If this is some kind of prank, I swear–”

I trailed off, a scream leaving my lips as I saw who was in the middle of the living room. I heard laughter, but I didn’t care to figure out where it came from. I just ran forward and threw myself into Scarlett’s arms.

She laughed loud, wrapping her arms around my shoulders. “Careful, or we’ll both end up on the floor.”

“What are you doing here?” I asked, pulling back. “I didn’t know you were coming.”

“I’m interim Alpha, remember?” she grinned. “I got a letter too. Technically, I left before the letter arrived. I’m so glad to be back.”

I took her in slowly, and as much as I hated to admit it, she looked good. Being away from home did her a lot of good.

She looked a little tired, but overall, she looked refreshed and mature in a way she didn’t here. It was as if she’d stepped into her own.

“Are you hungry?” I asked. “I can make you something–”

She held up a hand to stop me. “I’m fine, Daisy, I promise. Kai already made me breakfast while you were asleep. We have a lot to do today.”

I grinned. “Look at you talking like an Alpha. I’m impressed.”

She just shrugged. “Damien should be here in a moment. He seemed excited when I called him.”

I went still. “Damien?”

“Yeah, he kept saying there was something he knew and I didn’t.”

I cursed.

I hadn’t told Damien yet that I hadn’t told Kai the truth. If he were to tell Scarlett, there was no way that Kai wouldn’t find

out.

A knock on the door had me jumping.
