Chapter 112

To his credit, Damien was a good secret keeper.

I felt bad for making him lie to everyone, but I couldn’t tell Kai now. There was so much for him to think about, adding a child to the mix was only going to make things more complicated and stressful.

It was just for a few days anyway, or at least until we were able to handle the hunters. A pregnancy wasn’t something I could hide forever. At some point, my scent would change and I would begin to show, but until then…

“Have you met any of the other Alphas before?” Scarlett asked, snapping me out of my thoughts.

Kai and Damien were in a meeting with the council while Scarlett and I prepared for the meeting with the other Alphas.

We were holding it in the office and because of that, the entire office had been cleared out for the day, Apparently, meetings with Alphas could get explosive very quickly and it was important that there were no civilians around to witness it.

“I haven’t,” I said. “Have you?”

“Only the Alpha of the Southern pack. I knew the last Alpha of the Eastern and Western packs, but they’re dead now. I’m surprised you haven’t met them, you were the Beta’s daughter.”

I shrugged. “My father didn’t like to be reminded that I was his child. I was banned from all the meetings.”

“Well, the Southern pack is known for their coldness. Loran isn’t trying to be mean, he’s just… blunt. The Eastern pack Alpha -Phineas— is a notorious flirt from what I hear, but I doubt he’ll try anything with you. The only person that is a mystery to me is Jordan. The Western pack keeps to themselves.”

A flirt, a blunt man and an enigma… how bad could it get?

Kai and Damien returned within the hour and sometime around six, the Alphas arrived.

I felt the air shift the moment they walked in, I felt the aura that they carried and I quickly realized how easy it was for things to go badly. There was too much testosterone in the room. There was no ruler here, they were all on equal standing with themselves.

I noticed Loran immediately. He wore a massive fur coat and his lips were pressed into a hard line. I’d heard of the Southern pack and their snowcapped mountains but I’d never been.

My eyes locked on Phineas next. He made a show of bowing dramatically at me and winked at Scarlett. She rolled her eyes, but I didn’t miss the small smile that tugged at the corner of her lips.

Jordan was next, and he was not what I expected. He looked younger than the others with curly brown hair and soft eyes. Despite their softness though, it was obvious that he was not to be taken for granted. His hands were covered with scars and his eyes mapped out the room, taking note of the exits and where everyone sat.

“Welcome,” I said, gesturing for them to sit down. “I’m grateful for your speedy responses.”

“I think we can leave the pleasantries,” Loran drawled. “You told us there was a problem, I’d like to know what it is.”

From my right, Kai’s jaw clenched, but when he spoke, his voice was calm. “The hunters are stirring again, and this time, they are worse than before.”

“How so?” Phineas asked. “Your letter was vague.”

“They took children from all your packs,” I said slowly.

“That’s impossible. My pack cannot be penetrated,” Loran said almost proudly. “I would have known.”

I reached for the pictures in my pocket and took out the ones of the children who were from the Southern pack. I placed all four in front of him.

“You had the second highest kids taken.” I said softly. “They’re all here in this pack. They were kept locked up and tortured by the hunters for goddess knows how long. We’re hoping you can help us reunite them with their families.”

The tips of his cars tinged pink, but he didn’t reach for the pictures. He just analyzed it carefully.

“Were there any from my pack?” Jordan asked, speaking for the first time since he arrived.

I wasn’t surprised to hear his voice sound so soft.

I nodded, taking the picture of the little blond girl and placing it in front of him. She was the only one from his pack. There were six from the Northern pack and three from the East.-

Once the pictures were distributed in front of the Alphas, I continued speaking.

“I wrote their information at the back of the pictures. It shouldn’t be so hard to find their families and reunite them. They’re being treated right now, and they’re still fearful. I would appreciate it if their families could pick them up themselves.”

“Why?” Loran snapped. “Do you think we can’t protect our pack members?”

I exhaled deeply, folding my hands in front of me. “This isn’t about you, as much as you want to pretend that it is.”
