I knew the topic would come up at some point. I’d seen the way they watched Scarlett out of the corner of their eyes.
Jordan was much smarter than I gave him credit for. He was the youngest of all the Alphas, but he ruled his pack with a firm grip and they kept their secrets tightly bound.
I could tell the truth about Lucas without explaining the backstory between him and Daisy, and I had no intentions of exposing my mate like that. I already rehearsed a vague story, but before I could speak, Daisy cut in.
“Lucas was killed because he tried to take me from my pack. He was under the illusion that I belonged to him. If Kai hadn’t killed him, I would have myself. It also didn’t help that he was working with the hunters.”
Silence stretched through the room for a minute.
No one dared to speak.
“We should have been informed of this earlier,” Phineas said softly. “You waited until the threat was so large you couldn’t contain it. We could have nipped it in the bud.”
“Maybe,” Kai shrugged. “But there is no use crying over spilled milk. If we are going to finish these hunters, we need to work together.”
DAISY:
Over the next few hours, we explained everything we knew about the hunters so far. There wasn’t much from us, and to be honest, the other Alphas didn’t know much either.
The real disappointment came when I showed them the picture of the last child and no one recognized it. I knew it would be a stretch, but I’d hoped that there was some link between the picture and one of the packs.
I left them with copies of it though with the hope that while searching for the families of the children, they would find the boy or someone who knew him.
By the time we left the office, the sky was pitch black and the moon was high in the sky. Kai escorted them out to their cars. They’d spend the night and from tomorrow,
ey’d decide if they were staying or leaving.
“That went well,” Damien whispered, his tone dripping with sarcasm.
The corner of my lips tugged. “It could have been worse.”
“I honestly thought a fight would break out at the beginning,” he mused. “I was itching for a fight.”
“You Betas always are.”
I stilled when I heard Jordan’s voice from beside me.
I hadn’t heard him approach, and neither had Damien because he frowned and immediately pulled me behind him.
“I won’t harm your Luna,” Jordan said, holding up his hands. “It would be stupid of me to do that. The best case scenario is that you’d kill me.”
“And the worst?” I asked.
He smiled softly. “Your mate will torture me until I forget my own name.”
I was surprised by his honesty.

Chapter 113
Most Alphas would rather take their balls through a blender than admit that they wouldn’t win a fight.
“You seem surprised by me,” he said softly. “I get that often.”
“What do you want, Jordan?”

“I know the girl in the picture. I already sent out a message, her mother should be here by tomorrow evening.”
I glanced at Damien only to find him looking just as surprised as I felt.
“How?” I asked. “You got her picture a few hours ago.”
“I make it a point to know everything that happens in my pack. It isn’t often that kids go missing, so when a woman began to post missing pictures, I knew. I kept a picture of her in my office. I recognized her instantly.”
There was more to Jordan than I originally thought, and I wasn’t sure how I felt about that. He was quiet, but it was obvious
that he was smart.
“I’m sure she’ll be happy to go home,” I said finally. “Thank you.”
“Thank you for having us.”
I
gave him a curt nod and turned to leave when I heard him speak.
“And congratulations.”
My breath fucking stopped.
Next to me, Damien stilled. “What do
you mean?”
“You’re pregnant, right? Or did I miss the signs? I saw you touch your stomach occasionally. I thought you were sick at first, but I quickly realized that wasn’t it.”
I swallowed deeply, unable to speak. A knot formed in my throat and fear grew in my heart. If he were to tell Kai-
“I take it that your mate isn’t aware,” he continued. “I imagine he would have been more on edge and protective if he did.”
“What are you?” I couldn’t help but ask.
He was more observant than any werewolf I’d ever met. Most wolves barely saw past their own noses.
He just smiled. “I’m another Alpha, just like the others. Don’t worry, I won’t say a thing to your mate. That’s between the two of you. If you don’t mind, I’d like to leave your pack first thing tomorrow/morning. I don’t like to be away from my pack any longer than I need to.”
I nodded.
I wanted him out.
