Daisy didn’t tell me what Jordan said to her, and I normally wouldn’t have cared if it didn’t make her extra jumpy all night.

She was fine before she met with him, but after, she acted like something was coming to get her from every dark alley or corner. She told me she was just stressed, but I knew there was more to it when Damien wouldn’t say a word.

I left the room after Daisy had fallen asleep and called him. He picked up on the second ring and I didn’t waste any time with pleasantries.

“What did he say to her?” I asked.

Damien was silent for a moment. “Nothing important.”

“That’s the vaguest response I have ever heard in my life. I want to know exactly what he said.”

“He just said he wanted to leave and that he knew the girl’s family.”

Something told me he wasn’t telling me the whole truth. “That isn’t enough to make her jumpy.”

“I don’t know what to tell you, Kai. I have to go now.”

He didn’t wait for me to respond before hanging up.

In the entire time Damien and I had known each other, I couldn’t count up to three times where he’d ever hung up on me. Daisy was hiding something, and it was obvious that he was a part of it.

The only other person who could tell me was Jordan, and I wasn’t going to give him the advantage by letting him know there was something I didn’t know.

I made my way back to the bed where Daisy was snoring softly, curled up like a fetus. She clutched the covers tightly and curled herself into a ball.

“What are you hiding, princess?” I asked, brushing a strand of her hair out of her face. “Let me into your little head.”

She didn’t stir, she just continued to sleep.

I woke up the next morning to loud noise.

It took me a second to realize that both mine and Daisy’s phones were ringing. That almost never happened unless there was an emergency.

Sleep vanished from my eyes immediately as I sat up and grabbed my phone. Damien’s name flashed across my screen.

“What’s going on?” I asked, already getting out of bed and grabbing a pair of trousers. “Is someone hurt?”

“No, thank the goddess, but they attacked the border last night. We have a few people hurt, but nothing too terrible.”

“Fuck!” I cursed aloud. “What border?”

“The East, but Kai, we don’t need you at the border.”

That was the most absurd statement I’d ever heard from him. “What the fuck do you mean you don’t need me there? I need to know what happened.”

“They were heading towards the hospital.”

I still, my hand halfway through my shirt. “What?”

“None of the kids were hurt, thank the goddess, but they were heading straight there. The guards only caught them a few feet away. They couldn’t possibly have known that is where the kids were being kept, could they?”

We had over four hospitals in this pack. They would have needed inside information to know what hospital the kids were housed at.

We didn’t even keep them in the main pack hospital so people wouldn’t find out. Something fishy was going on and I needed to get to the bottom of it fast.

“Keep me updated with the border,” I said finally.

“Will do.”

I hung up and pulled my shirt on completely. I looked up to find Daisy already dressed in sweats and one of my sweatshirts. It was much too large for her, but I doubt she minded.

“Scarlett said she’s with the other Alphas,” she said. “They have a bunch of questions. She’s trying to keep them distracted. They’re uneasy.”

“I don’t give a fuck about them right now, Daisy. I’m sure they can handle an extra hour of silence.”

She sighed deeply. “This is getting out of hand.”

“I know. Are you coming with me?”

The hospital was still in a heightened state of tension when we got there.

There were more guards outside than there were yesterday, and the nurses where whispering between themselves.

“Where are the children?” I asked as we got to the front desk. “Still in their ward?”

The nurse on duty nodded. “We tried to keep them distracted, but they knew something was wrong. We gave them ice cream for breakfast. I know it isn’t healthy but-”

“You did good,” Daisy assured her with a smile. “Thank you.”

That seemed to calm her down a little and she gestured for us to go forward.

There were guards manning the children’s ward and as soon as they saw us, we were greeted by a few smiles and stained

cheeks.

“They came for us, didn’t they?” came Evan’s voice from beside me.

I hadn’t even noticed that he wasn’t with the others. He stood by the wall, his tiny hands tightened into fists.

Something glinted from inside his closed fists and I raised a brow.

“Is that a weapon?” I asked and he nodded.

“They won’t take me again,” he said firmly, showing me the tiny blade he held. “I took it from the nurse.”

“Can you give us a minute?” I asked Daisy.

She didn’t respond, but she walked over to the other kids, her tone cheerful as she greeted them.
