Chapter 115
Chapter 115
“Please tell me you didn’t give a child a weapon,” I whispered as soon as Kai was next to me.
I tried to give him the space he needed with that boy, but I couldn’t help but glance at them out of the corner of my eye when I saw him hand the boy a pocket knife.
He just shrugged. “If it makes him feel safe then so be it. Besides, he is less likely to cut himself on that knife than on a hospital blade that he nicked.”
I turned to face him, not even bothering to hide my shock. “Are you going to give our children weapons too?”
The words were out of my mouth before I could stop them. I’d been thinking about our children more often than usual. I suppose it was a given considering that in a few months I would be having his baby.
He smiled wide. “I like the way you said our.”
I smacked him on the shoulder, not even bothering to hide the small smile that tugged on my lips. “I’m serious, Kai.”
“Our children will always have a weapon on them as a means to defend themselves. I want them to know how to protect themselves and fight.”
“Even the girls?”
He snorted. “Especially the girls.”
That gave me some form of relief at least.
Back at the northern pack, only the males were allowed to fight. They still followed the same stupid traditionalist values from eons ago. According to Lucas’ father “if something isn’t broken, don’t fic it’
But the reality was that system was broken a fucking long time ago. Whenever there was an issue, the women were always hurt first. Everyone knew where to attack, and whenever we had a rogue breach the walls, it was always the defenseless women who lost their lives.
A soft hand brushed my cheek, snapping me out of my thoughts. “What are you thinking about that has you frowning?”
“The Northern pack,” I admitted. “I really hope Scarlett can change some things there.”
“Anything in particular?”
“Where do I even start?” I scoffed. “A lot is wrong there.”
“Perhaps you’d like to talk to her about it? There isn’t much to do today while we wait for the families to come.”
I leaned my head against his shoulder with a sigh.
I hadn’t even told the kids that they’d be going home yet, I didn’t have the chance.
Kai placed a soft kiss at the top of my head and I heard a small voice speak up from the side.
“Why’d you kiss her?”
I turned to find the little blond haired girl. Her sharp green eyes peered up at us with a mix of admiration and confusion.
I wasn’t sure how to answer her question but thankfully, Kai cut in. “Because I love her.”
She listened to my words intently with a hum. “No one ever kisses my mummy.”

She shrugged. “I’ve never met him. Mum says it’s not safe for him to stay with us, but I’ve seen his picture. She cries with it every night.”
My heart broke for the little girl. She was only six, she was far too young to be thinking of things like this.
“Do you have a child?” she asked and I nearly choked on my own spit.
What was it with people and talking about kids now?
No one said anything when I wasn’t pregnant, but now, it was as if they were all trying to fucking out me.
I coughed, trying to get some air back into my lungs. I felt Kai’s warm hand pressed up against my back and his sharp eyes boring into the side of my head, but I refused to look at him.
“No, sweetheart,” he said softly. “We don’t have any kids yet.”
“Do you want one? My mum says I’m the best thing that’s ever happened to her.”
Kai laughed aloud at that. “I believe that, and yes, I do want children, but only when she’s ready.”
She opened her mouth, presumably to ask more questions, but I quickly cut in.
“You may be going home today,” I told her.
She went comically still, her eyes going wide and her mouth dropping open. “Really?”
I nodded. “We reached out to all your packs. They will be trying to find your families. Hopefully you all should be home by the end of the week.”
Squeals of joy and rejoicing filled the air.
My chest warmed at the sight of all the excited children. I could only imagine how relieved they were to finally be going
home.
“Miss. Daisy?” someone perked up. “Are we going to go home in these hospital dresses?”
“Mine is a bit itchy,” another child perked up.
“And you can see my butt through this.”
My lips quirked at their concerns. “Someone should be here in a few minutes with new clothes for all of you.”
As if on cue, there was a knock on the door, and a nurse poked her head in. “We have someone here for the kids.”
Rows upon rows of clothes were brought into the room and I watched as all the kids jumped off the bed in excitement.
I couldn’t even begin to imagine the strings Kai had to pull to make this happen, but the joy and gladness on their faces were
worth it.
The nurse didn’t leave the door immediately, so I knew there was more to be said.
I made my way over to her and she dropped her voice to a whisper as she spoke. “One of the parents is here already.”
