I went over every detail of that conversation in my head, but the more I thought about it, the more confused I got because there was nothing Daisy said that should have warranted that kind of response.

He wasn’t pissed when we spoke about the other kids, but something about that child in particular caused such a violent

reaction.

Perhaps it was because they’d tortured the kid more than the others. Maybe there was something special about him.

The others mostly had scars on their wrists from the chains used to hold them and they had minor cuts and bruises, but that child looked like he’d been taken through the wringer. Every inch of his exposed skin was covered with bruises.

“Daisy,” I called out, causing her head to snap up. “Do you have the physical copies of the pictures?”

She shook her head. “Scarlett should. I asked her to bring them with her.”

“Tell her to give them to Damien. I want his men going over every inch of that photo. Whatever they find that is out of the ordinary, I want to know. There’s something important about that picture and I want to know what it is.”

She nodded and grabbed her phone to make a call.

I ran my fingers through my hair with a sigh.

Something fishy was going on, and I had a feeling that picture held the answer to a lot of things.

Thankfully, Scarlett did bring the photos and Damien was able to get a head start on them.

Daisy and I spent the rest of the day going over some work until evening when the parents of the children began to arrive.

I wanted to be there to see each child go home, not just because of Daisy’s attachment to the kids, but because I wanted to see how the children would react. I wouldn’t put it past Roger to try and send one of his hunters to get the kids again but so far, all the children seemed excited to find their families.

I was just relieved that we were able to find their parents so fast.

Considering that not a lot of werewolf children went missing each year, it wasn’t difficult to narrow down the lists. For some of them, we were even able to get their birthdays and parents names as well.

The last two children to be claimed were Evan and a little boy close to his age. The boy was from Phineas’ pack and I could tell just by looking at him that he was anxious. He bounced his leg and picked at the inside of his fingernails so much that I could see a scab beginning to form.

“Are you alright?” I asked, taking the seat next to him. He hesitated for a moment before nodding. “You don’t seem okay to me.”

“What if they don’t come?” he asked softly. “Roger said they don’t want us anymore.”

It still surprised me that Roger used his real name with them.

Was it overconfidence that they would never be caught? Or was there something else at play that we didn’t know?

“They will,” I assured him. “I cannot imagine anyone not wanting you. You seem like a perfect little boy.”

He smiled softly. “My dad used to say that I was naughty. I put worms in his shoes. What if he’s upset?”

“I don’t have a kid,” I began softly. “But if I did and he went missing, I’d want him back, even if it meant I got worms in my shoes every day.”

He threw his arms around my torso and buried his head in my chest. To my right, I heard Daisy sniffle and saw her wipe tears out of her eyes.

When she saw me looking, she quickly glanced away. She’d been avoiding my eyes all day and I was tired of pretending that everything was fine was something was clearly wrong.

Before I could ask her down the mind link, the door opened again and a nurse poked her head in.

“Their parents are here,” she said softly.

“Which one?” Daisy asked.

“Both.”

Both boys held onto my hands as we led them down the stairs and towards the hallway.

Their families paced anxiously at the end of the hall and as soon as they saw them, they took off in their direction.

I watched the boy’s father pick him up and cradle his head, and on the other side of the room, Evan threw himself into his mother’s arms but what caught my eye was the boy standing behind Evan’s mother.

He didn’t look anything like them and from his scent, he was a werewolf. He clearly wasn’t Evan’s father seeing as he was a hybrid, and he didn’t look pleased to be there.

“Let’s go,” he snapped. “We have to go home before it’s late.”

Both Evan and his mother straightened immediately, as if his command had snapped something inside of them. The mother hung her head low, but Evan… he kept his eyes firmly on the man as he stepped closer.
