Evan’s mother was inconsolable and to be honest, I couldn’t tell if she was more upset at the fact that her son may have killed someone or that the man she was with was dead..
Her shoulders shook with the force of her sobs and she couldn’t respond to any of the questions we tried to ask her.
Evan’s accusation was huge and I couldn’t think of a reason why the boy would lie. I’d never seen that much rage on anyone’s face before, much less a child. My only hope was that the man wasn’t dead, not because he may not deserve it, but because it wasn’t something I wanted on a child’s conscience.
“We have people tearing apart the house for any information we can find that links them to the hunters,” Scarlett said as she walked into the hospital room. “Where is the boy?”
“With Kai. He did try to kill a man so he’s under supervision.”
“Is he going to be arrested?”
I shrugged. “I don’t know.”
This was unlike anything we’d ever had to deal with before. This was a child, a fucking traumatized child who was chained up like an animal and tortured for over six months.
His mother wailed again in front of me and a wave of rage so volatile swirled up inside of me.
“Would you fucking snap out of it?” I yelled and she went still, her sob catching in her throat. “Your son could be tried for fucking murder and you’re wailing. You’re the parent here so fucking act like it.”
She hiccupped but didn’t speak.
“If there is anything you know that can help us then say something. Evan isn’t speaking anymore. Tell us what his relationship is like with his step-father.”
She swallowed. “Gary isn’t his step-father, not officially at least. He’s my mate, but we haven’t made it official yet.”
“Why not?”
She didn’t speak.
“For fucks sake will you open your mouth!”
Scarlett placed a warm hand on my shoulder. “Relax, Daisy.”
I sighed deeply, running my hands down my face.
I was far too emotionally involved in this than I should be, but I couldn’t just let everything play out on its own. Evan was just a boy, and he deserved better. I hadn’t known him for long, but he seemed kind. Guarded, but soft.
I turned back to his mother. “Please, we need to help him.”
“He killed Gary.”
“Gary is still in surgery, and Evan is your son. Do you want to lose them both?”
She sobbed into her hands. “Gary didn’t want Evan. When we met, I had to be honest about what Evan was. Not everyone likes a hybrid child. There’s always a chance that they never get their wolves and become runts. He didn’t want that on his conscience so he wanted to wait until Evan turned thirteen before he made a decision.”

“And what was their relationship like?” I asked. “Did they get along?”

“Gary was hard on him, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t love him. He’s just very… firm in how he likes to discipline.”
Translation: He hit Evan.
I scoffed.
Thankfully, I wasn’t the only one who was disgusted by that statement. Even Scarlett couldn’t hide her expression.
“I know what you’re thinking, but he only does it because he loves us,” she whispered. “He means no harm I swear. He always apologizes after and he tells us that it’s for our own good. Gary is a good man.”
“Us?” I asked and she went silent.
Her shoulders hunched and she bowed her head to the ground.
It was only then I noticed that she was wearing a long sleeve in the afternoon and that she kept her hair down to cover her neck. She fiddled with the sleeves of her shirt anxiously and chewed on the inside of her cheek.
Ever so carefully, I reached for her hand.
She jumped and tried to jerk back, but I wrapped my arms around her wrist. “I’m not going to hurt you, I swear.”
Her eyes were wary, but she didn’t pull back again.
Slowly, I rolled up her sleeves and when I saw the purple bruises on her pale skin, my stomach fucking dropped.
“They’ll fade,” she said hurriedly, pulling her hands back. “We werewolves heal fast!”
“So they’re new?”
I didn’t need her to respond, but she did anyway, nodding slowly.
“He wasn’t happy that he had to miss work to come with me today. He didn’t want us to bring Evan back. He said that our lives would be better without him. But that doesn’t mean he gave Evan to them, right?”
She searched my face for any sign of hope, but I had none to give her. Everything she had said so far pointed to Evan telling the truth, and the only reason I wanted that bastard to pull through from that surgery was so that he could tell the truth about what happened to Evan.
“I need to go see your son,” I said finally, rising to my feet. “I’m sure he’s scared right now and confused.”
“Please tell him that I love him, and I forgive him, and that Gary will too.”
“Gary hurt you,” I snapped. “He gave your son to people who chained him in the dark and tortured him. Do you want to see the scars on his body?”
She shut her eyes tightly. “No, he loves us. He is the only one who does. No one else would take us.”
I felt nothing but pity for the woman in front of me.
It was clear that Gary had done a number on them. He had made them wholly dependent on him and that wasn’t going to be easy to break.
“I’ll be right back,” I whispered to Scarlett. “Keep an eye on her for me, okay?”
She nodded before speaking directly into my mind. “I will, but Daisy, what’s going to happen to the boy? She is obviously not in the right frame of mind to raise him on her own.”
