He had expressed blatant distaste and hatred for the hunters onumerous occasions. He was in charge of the team that was set apart to keep an eye on them and fight them when they got to close. Why would he suddenly go and work with them?

The only logical explanation was that the Alpha was pulling his rings, and I’d be damned if I let him take the fall for it.

“Tell me about the Alpha,” Kai said suddenly and my head snapped to him.

“Excuse me?”

“Sit down, Daisy.” He gestured to the seat in front of his desk.

A part of me wanted to refuse, but I’d tested my luck enough with him for one day. Slowly, I lowered myself into the cool leather.

“You said the Alpha would pin the blame on your father. Tell me about the Alpha.”

“You’re the king,” I shot back. “shouldn’t you know all about him”

His lips curled. “The Alpha has not been photographed out in over a month… why?”

I hesitated before speaking.

Even though I’d been banished from that pack, it was still my home. It was where I grew up, where I lived, and talking about their secrets felt like betrayal.

“You’re planning revenge against the Alpha’s son and helping the king bring the pack down,” my wolf sneered. “I think you’re well past the betrayal stage.”

“Shut up.”

“I’m just saying,” she continued. “There’s no way they will take you back now. You’re a traitor already. You may as well just go the whole way. At least now you’ll be saving your father.”

I shut her out.

I knew she was right, but that didn’t make it any easier.

Swallowing deeply, I began to speak. “He’s sick.”

Kai paused. “What do you mean by sick? Werewolves don’t get sk.”

“We don’t, but there are things that can affect us and weaken our immune system. They’re not easy to come by, which is why they kept the news of the Alpha’s sickness hidden.”

“He was poisoned,” Kaj deduced and I nodded.

“Only the higher–ups know: The Alpha’s family, The Beta’s family, the pack general and the pack doctor. We were working round the clock to try and find something that could help.”

“IF the Alpha is sick, then you know that the chances of him being behind this are slim.” Kai began softly. “If he is being poisoned, then have you considered that maybe your father is-”

“Stop!” I cut him off. “Don’t finish that sentence.”

“You need to look at things logically.”

“He is my father!” I screamed. “Sure he has done some horrible hings in the past but he loves that pack. He put the pack first, above everything, above me! He kicked me out to protect the pack’s reputation for fucks sake!”

Silence stretched through the room at my outburst. I wished I could take it back, but it was already out there, and the more seconds ticked by, the more embarrassed I got.

“I’m sorry, you probably think I’m stupid,” I swallowed, smoothing down my dress. “I think I should go-”

I’d reached the door when I heard Kai’s voice.

“My father was a self–righteous bastard too.”

I froze, hesitating before turning to face him. “Well he didn’t kick you out, did he?”

“No, but he beat the crap out of me every night. He was a good man to the pack, but he treated me and my mother like shit.”

“Why are you telling me this?”

“Because I want you to know that you’re not stupid for thinking that he could be cruel to you and good to the pack. Some people just aren’t made to be parents.”

I opened my mouth to speak, but the words wouldn’t come out.

I didn’t know what to say, so I just slowly made my way to the chair and sat down quietly, my hands folded neatly in my lap.

“I know you want to protect him,” Kai continued. “I just need you to keep an open mind here, because you may find out things that you don’t like.”

My lips pursed in annoyance. “I know.”

“No, Daisy, you don’t. You have no idea what we may uncover on this path of revenge, and this is the last time I’m going to ask if you really want to do this.”

“I do.”

I wanted Lucas to suffer for what he did to me. That hadn’t changed, and I doubted it would anytime soon.

He sighed. “Alright then. I’ll ask Alaric to hold onto the video for while. In the meantime, we need to start planning the mating ceremony.”
