Gary sighed in relief once he saw them. “Marie, tell them that I’m innocent. He’s your son. If you withdraw the case-”
“You sold him to those monsters!” she hissed. “Look at what they did to him.”
His eyes widened in shock but he quickly hid it, his jaw tensing in anger. “I don’t have time for games. Do as I said-”
“No!” she snapped. “They… You hurt him. You sent him away. For months I cried for him and you sat there knowing that it was your fault.”
“Marie-”
“Don’t fucking call my name!” she screamed at him. “I hope they burn you alive, you fucking pig!”
The shock on Gary’s face almost made the whole situation worth it, but even that satisfaction would never take away what was done to Evan and the horrors he had to endure, or the horrors that his mother would now have to live with.
I’d only intimately dealt with an abuse case once in my life, and that was how I knew that even if we found all the proof in the world, Evan’s mother would never believe us.
Once Daisy had left to speak to Gary, I made my way into her room with Evan in tow. She was sobbing into her hands with Scarlett standing to the side, watching her.
“She’s been like this for ten minutes now,” she said via the mind link. “I don’t know how to help, 1-”
“Leave us,” I instructed.
Her eyes widened in shock. “Are you sure?”
“I know how to deal with women like her, remember?”
Her face fell, but only for the fraction of a second. She knew better than anyone that I didn’t need her pity. My mother may have been abused but she was the strongest woman I knew.
She left the room, leaving me alone with the sobbing woman and her son.
“Come on,” I’d said to her. “I need to show you something.”
“Show me what?”
“Your son.”
She lifted her head slowly, her eyes locking on Evan. I gave Evan a curt nod and he lifted his shirt so she could see the bruises coating his skin, the lashes that would never fully heal because they were made with silver. Her lower lip trembled as she took in the fading bruises on his wrists from the cutt’s

“There are pictures of what he looked like when we first found them,” I told her. “Evidence of what Gary caused-”
“Gary would never.”
“Are you sure about that?” I asked.
She glanced at her son and hesitated. “But why would he do that? He would never.”
“Why don’t we find out? Daisy is questioning him now.”
She laughed humorlessly. “Gary hates being questioned by women. He will never answer her and if she pushes, he may-”
She trailed off, but I knew exactly what she wanted to say.
I squatted so I was at eye level with her. “I know men like Gary. Hell, my father was like him, and men like that are spineless when faced with real authority. He hit you because he knew that you would never fight back. He would never hit my mate because he knows he’s a fucking dead man if he does. Now, do you want to hear what he has to say or not?”
It took her a full minute before she nodded and let me lead her towards Gary’s room and with each word Gary spoke, the scales fell off her eyes. I watched her expression go from shock to shame before she finally settled on anger.
Watching her confront him was a sight I never knew I needed. My mother never got that opportunity. I imagine that she would’ve enjoyed it thoroughly.
“Is he going to die?” Marie asked me.
I couldn’t read the expression on her face, but I nodded slowly. “Only if you want him to.”
She thought about it for a moment before nodding. “Make it slow, and make it painful.”
Without another word, she stormed out of the room, pulling her son with her as she went. Gary called out to her, but she didn’t look back once and I realized that she and Evan would be just fine. It might take a few rocky years, but she’d get through it.
Guards walked into the room led by Scarlett and they slapped a pair of silver handcuff’s onto Gary’s wrist before chaining him to the edge of the bed.
He hissed out in pain, begging for mercy from anyone who would listen, but I ignored him, wrapping my arm around Daisy’s waist and leading her out of the room. Her work was done.
“Thank you for trusting me to do that,” she whispered softly, once we were out of earshot. “I thought you’d barge in.”
I snorted. “Believe me, I almost did.”
“I’m glad you didn’t-”

“Your majesty.” I turned towards the sound of the voice and saw Marie standing there.
She fiddled with her thumbs, her head bowed to the ground.

“Thank you for finding my son,” she began softly. “And for showing me what a horrible person Gary was. I should’ve known… I just-if I had noticed sooner Evan would never have-”
“Don’t beat yourself up,” I cut her off. “What’s done is done, and there is nothing you can do to change that. What you can do is focus on your child.”
She sniffled. “I don’t even know where to start. He probably hates me.”
“He doesn’t,” I assured her. “Trust me. He hurts for you is all.”
She wiped at her tears, nodding slowly. “I’m sorry if I’m prying but you said something about your father earlier. Did your mother ever… was she able to-”
She couldn’t finish the sentence, but I didn’t need her to.
“When my father died, it took my mother a while to get herself back, but she did. The one thing he couldn’t take from her was her dignity”
Placing a comforting hand on her shoulder, I gave her a soft smile.
“I think you and your son will be just fine.”
