Chapter 122
I’d never heard Kai say so much about his family before.

I knew the vague details, like how his father was an asshole, but Kai never explained more and I never asked. I never wanted to make it feel like I was imposing or stirring up memories from the past, but I couldn’t shake the feeling of curiosity.
He’d handled the situation perfectly. Perhaps that was due to all the years… maybe decades of watching his parents.
“You’re quiet,” he observed as we made our way towards the car. “Is there a problem?”
I shook my head. “I’m just thinking.”
“About how much I have in common with Evan?”
“I wasn’t-”
“It’s okay,” he assured me, flashing me a small smile. “It’s not a bad thing. I’ve thought about it too. He’s a strong thing, I think he’ll be fine.”
“He’s just thirteen, Kai. He is a hybrid, he has been tortured and he just tried to kill someone. No one thirteen year old should ever have to go through that. And his mum… you didn’t see her before. I don’t know if she’s stable enough to take care of him-”
“She will be.”
“You don’t know that.”
“But I do, Daisy,” he said softly. “I’ve seen this play out many times. Even if she isn’t stable enough, Evan will never leave her. I had so many opportunities to leave my mother, but I didn’t.”
“You were an adult.”
“When my father stopped hitting me, I was sixteen. I was already as big as he was, and thanks to his rigorous training, I could hold my own. He punched me one afternoon and I just fucking lost it. I hit him back.”
Silence stretched through the otherwise empty parking lot.
“My mother was there. She screamed and cried and begged me to let him go. I wanted to kill him. Hell, I would have killed him if she hadn’t picked up the knife and threatened to kill herself. I may not have done as much damage as I wanted, but the threat was clear and he never laid a hand on me again.”
He smiled sardonically as if remembering a bad memory.
“I left for boarding school the next year. I wanted nothing to do with him, and I thought that because I’d shown him I could fight back that he wouldn’t hit my mother again. I came home one summer and found her with a black eye. She wasn’t expecting me for another two days so she hadn’t bothered to hide it. I never went back to boarding school.”

“My point is, Evan won’t leave her. Just because he hits her doesn’t mean she isn’t a strong fucking woman. My mother ran this pack and she was a good Queen despite everything that happened indoors. Her only fault was loving a monster.”
I never meant to imply that she wasn’t strong. I never meant to try and insinuate anything. I was only concerned for Evan.
I opened my mouth to apologize, but Kai shook his head, stunning me into silence.
He pressed his lips to my forehead. “You have nothing to apologize for.”
I didn’t even bother asking how he knew. My wall was down and my emotions were on full display for both of
“I wish I got to meet your mother,” I mumbled softly.
He cracked a smile. “She would have loved you. She always wanted me to be happy.”
“Did she know about the mating arrangement with Eva?”
He hesitated for a moment before nodding. “She hated the idea. I think it had more to do with how her mating turned out. She knew I’d never hurt a woman, but she just couldn’t get behind it. It’s part of the reason I never went through with it.”
“When did she die?”
“Ten years after my father did. I was probably eighty at the time.”
A bark of laughter burst out of me. “I forget how old you lycans are.”
“Does it bother you?” he asked softly and I realized that even though he had never voiced it out before, he was truly concerned.
“No,” I answered immediately.
I didn’t need to think about it.
His age didn’t matter, not to me anyway. I knew exactly who he was and it didn’t matter if he was thirty or three hundred, he was mine.
“Good,” he murmured, leaning forward to kiss me. “I think we’ve had a long day. How does dinner sound?”
“Fucking amazing actually,” I mumbled. “I’ve been craving some lasagna.”
His brows rose in amusement. “You’ve been very specific about your food cravings lately. Are you good?”
My cheeks burned bright.
I’d have to tell him about the baby sooner or later. I wasn’t sure how much longer I’d be able to keep it a secret

scent began to change. Now would have been as good a time as any, but I couldn’t bring myself to
The last thing he needed was to worry about a baby when there was so much going on.
A few more days, then I’d tell him the truth.
“What’s going to happen to Evan and his mother?” I asked, quickly changing the subject. “Are they going back home?”
If he noticed what I did, he didn’t let on. He just started the car and began the long drive back home.
“There’s always that option, but I want to give them the option of staying here.”
“Is that possible?” I asked. “Won’t that involve a lot of paperwork?”
“Normally, it should, but right now, the Northern pack is under palace rule. It’ll be easy to just have her moved here. I think a fresh start might do them both some good.”
That sounded like a good idea, and it would make it easy for me to keep an eye on them.
I trusted Kai and his judgment, but that didn’t mean I wanted to let them out of my sight so soon. I had to ensure that they were settling in well.
“About the Northern pack,” I began slowly. “How much longer will they be under us? Are you going to make it permanent?”
“I thought about it.”
“But?” I asked, urging him to finish the sentence.
“Scarlett seems to be doing well there, and the reports say that she’s doing a good job. I’m thinking of making it permanent… only if she agrees.”
