There were three women in the common room of the pack house. From their scents, they were all wolves, and they all looked to be somewhere in their seventies. Sometimes I was left shocked when I saw just how quickly werewolves aged compared to lycans.

“I’m sure you’re all wondering why we pulled you away from your homes urgently.” I cleared my throat, making my way over to them. “We know that each of you lost a son over thirty years ago. We just have some questions?”

“Why now?” one of them asked. “You didn’t care thirty years ago.”

“Thirty years ago, it wasn’t a palace issue. Unfortunately kidnappings are a pack problem unless it crosses pack lines, then it becomes ours.”

Their gazes were still skeptical, and perhaps a bit hopeful too, but no one spoke or moved.

“My mate is going to show you a picture. You can tell me if you recognize it.”

I nodded to Daisy and she pulled out the picture from her back pocket. She handed it to each of the women and I carefully watched their reactions. They all had identical looks of horror as they took in what had been done to the child, but none of them claimed him.

They all shook their heads, claiming he wasn’t theirs.

“Are you sure?” Daisy asked. “You can look at the pictures again.”

They shook their heads quickly.

She opened her mouth to speak again but I cut in. “Thank you for your time. You will be escorted to rooms where you can spend the night. It’s too late to travel now.”

They nodded, rising to their feet immediately. A guard ushered them up the stairs, and I waited until the last of them was gone before I turned to Daisy only to find her already spiraling.

“This can’t be possible,” she mumbled. “We are back at square one.”

“No, we aren’t.”

She rolled her eyes. “They didn’t recognize him, Kai. He doesn’t belong to them. Where the hell are we going to find-”

“One of them was lying,” I cut her off.

“Even if that is true, there is no way to find out which one. We don’t have the time to dig into their lives.”

“We don’t need to. I know who it was.”

She went silent immediately, raising a brow. “I don’t get it. I was looking at all of them. No one looked at him with recognition. I was watching their expressions.”

“That is true, but only one of them looked at the picture with loathing,” I explained. “You were looking for a mother who loves her child and wants him back. This mother hates his guts.”

We waited a few minutes to give the illusion that she’d won, then we headed to her room.

Damien and Scarlett followed close behind us in case anything were to go wrong. I wouldn’t be able to keep an eye on both Daisy and the woman at the same time, and someone who hated their own child as much as this woman did was not someone to be trusted.

I pushed the door open only to find her speaking in hushed tones on the phone. As soon as she saw me, she straightened, slowly hanging up.

“Alpha,” she bowed. “To what do I owe the pleasure?”

“You can stop with the games,” I cut her off. “I know he’s your son.”

I tossed the picture at her feet. She couldn’t control the hatred in her eyes or the twist of her upper lip.

She hadn’t spoken once while in the common area, and she would have gotten away with it, but the feelings she harbored against her child were strong. They’d survived thirty years of absence.

“Where is he?” I asked and she shrugged. “Answer me.”

“I don’t know,” she admitted. “I haven’t seen him since he turned eighteen.”

“He was thirteen in that picture.”

She scoffed, crossing her hands over her chest. “Believe me, I know. It was two weeks after his thirteenth birthday. He was supposed to shift, but he didn’t. he was a fucking runt. No child of mine is a runt.”

“Maybe he was a late bloomer,” Daisy suggested but she rolled her eyes.

“He wasn’t. He was never going to shift.”

“How do you know that?”

“Because his father was a human,” she snapped. “I didn’t know it at first. One day I went out with some friends. I got wasted and had a one night stand with this guy. I never saw him again and a few weeks later I was pregnant. It was a werewolf club so I didn’t think much of it. It wasn’t until I had the child that I noticed… differences in his scent and his development.”

She laughed humorlessly.

“A fucking runt,” she hissed. “I did everything to bring his wolf side out. I tried every trick in the goddamn book.”

“You tortured him!” Daisy screamed, taking a step forward. “He’s your son.”

“He’s a useless hybrid. All he had to do was shift and everything would have been fine, but no, he didn’t. He ran away when he was eighteen. Knowing him, he probably didn’t make it past a day in the wild.”

She sounded so callous. There was no hint of motherly affection in her tone. I’d seen my fair share of terrible mothers, but none this bad.

“How did his picture end up with the hunters?” I asked and she shrugged.
