My suspicions began the moment she told us that he ran away.

There were very few plausible explanations as to what had happened to him, and I’d been hoping that my belief was wrong. The pipeline from abused to abuser was not that uncommon, but it made this situation infinitely harder to deal with.

I turned to my family, and their expressions ranged from shock to disbelief and horror. Their faces showed all the emotions that I felt but was unable to voice out on my own.

“Do you know what you’ve done?” Scarlett asked, her voice barely over a whisper. “Do you know what singular act of torturing your son has done to us?”

She rolled her eyes. “I didn’t torture him, I was trying to help him-”

Scarlett’s face burned a bright shade of red. “Your son now has the largest and most dangerous team of hunters that we have ever seen and because of your fucking torture, he has been targeting other hybrids. He is a national nuisance because of you.”

There was only a brief flash of fear and concern in her eyes, but it was gone just as quickly as it came.

“I didn’t make him do all those things,” she tried to defend herself. “He chose to-”

“Spare me the bullshit,” I cut her off. “You’re just as guilty as he is for those children that he kidnapped and tortured. You are just as guilty for every werewolf he has killed. Their blood is on your head.”

Her mouth gaped. “Legally, I’m not-”

“Legally, you are what I say you are,” I snapped. “You forget that this is my kingdom, and you are on my pack lands.”

All the blood leeched out of her face and she turned to Kai, as if hoping that he would defend her. I nearly laughed at that. If only she could feel the rage that was currently swirling down the mating bond, she’d know that Kai was more likely to rip her head off her shoulders than to advocate for her.

Between us all, I was the most level headed, and that was saying a lot.

“You are going to help us find him,” I continued. “You will help us track him and put an end to everything.”

I didn’t want to imagine what Roger’s life would have been like if he wasn’t mistreated by his mother. He may have grown up to be a good person, hell, we may have crossed paths at some point seeing as he was originally from my pack.

Instead, his life had taken a horrible trajectory, all because he was cursed to have a horrid mother.

“If I help,” she began slowly. “You will agree to waive my crimes.”

Kai laughed.

It was the first sound he’d made since the grand reveal. The laugh was cold and jagged, like the sound of nails on a chalkboard. It wasn’t meant to amuse or comfort, and even she could tell because she shivered, taking a step back as she watched my mate.

He pushed off the wall where he leaned, hands crossed over his chest as he took slow steps towards her until he was right in front of her.

“You are under the impression that you are in a position to negotiate,” he drawled.

“You need my help.”

He smiled cruelly. “It would be much easier to kill you or torture you the same way you tortured your son. I don’t assume that you’ll be able to take half as much as you dished out.”

She swallowed deeply, her heart picking up as sweat formed on her brow. “I am an old woman, you wouldn’t hurt an old woman.”

“You’re younger than I am,” he shrugged. He leaned closer to her and whispered. “You’d also be surprised to find out that there isn’t a lot I wouldn’t do to protect my pack.”

He pulled back, his lips pulled into a tight smile that promised pain and vengeance if she didn’t speak.

It always amazed me to see him like this.

I was so used to seeing him as my mate that on the rare occasion where I saw him become the cruel king that people knew him as, I was tempted to believe that it was another individual entirely.

“I don’t know how to catch him,” she admitted finally. “I haven’t seen him since he was eighteen.”

She looked away on the last word, and I instantly knew she was lying.

I stepped up to her. “We don’t have time for games. Tell the truth-”

“I am telling the truth,” she hissed. “I haven’t seen him… personally at least, but when my house burned down,

I suspected, and when I found the bunker I used to keep him in destroyed, that was when I knew, I knew he was alive. I didn’t know what he was doing. I thought he was just scaring me.”

“When did this bunker get destroyed?” I asked and she shrugged.

“A little over six months ago.”

Just before Evan was taken.

“I haven’t heard or seen any sign of him since, but I know he’s been watching me. I can feel it in my bones. He wants to kill me, that much I can tell. A mother knows.”

I scoffed.

She didn’t deserve to call herself a mother, not after what she did to him

“He won’t take me alive though,” she continued. “I’m always armed to the teeth with silver. If he comes for
