I saw the instant my words settled in Kai’s subconscious because he cursed aloud.
He turned to Scarlett. “I want guards manning this room. Hell, I want them around the entire pack house. No one goes in or out without being properly checked and vetted.”
It was clear she was confused at the rapid change in energy, but she nodded, running out of the room to do as he’d asked.
He turned to Damien next. “I want the borders secured. I want every guard at the border armed to their fucking teeth. I need a list of every single person who has come in or out of this pack in the past week. The number of envoys from the other packs and all.”
Damien nodded. “I’ll check the logs and get back to you.”
He left next, leaving Kai and I alone with Roger’s mother.
“What is going on?” she asked. “Do you know where he is?’
I nodded slowly. “If we’re lucky, he hasn’t breached the pack yet.”
“And if you’re not?”
Kai smiled cruelly. “You’d be the first to know. I assume he has a lot to say to his mother dearest.”
I saw the first genuine emotion flash across her face… fear.
With a gentle hand on the small of my back, Kai ushered me out of the room. She called out after us, demanding that we keep her safe in exchange for her help, but we ignored her. The door was locked shut behind us and I heard her slamming her fists against the wooden door.
I kept walking until her voice was merely an echo on the wind.
It wasn’t until we got into the car that I finally turned to face my mare. “The pack isn’t safe.”
He sighed, running his fingers through his hair. “Trust me, I know.”
“Are we going to warn the others?”
He didn’t waste any time before shaking his head. “It’ll only incite panic. Roger may be idealistic, but he isn’t stupid. He knows he cannot take the whole pack, not on his own. He will try to strike where we are weak.”
“Wouldn’t that be the town? Where everyone is?”
“You’re thinking in terms of war, princess. Roger can’t win a war against us, not even with his silver weapons. We vastly outnumber them. If he wants to hurt us, he has a better chance striking from the top. If he takes us out, then the pack is his.”
I swallowed deeply, a knot forming in the pit of my stomach. “I take it this is the part where you tell me to

stay at home and lock the doors.”

He glanced at me out of the corner of his eye, his jaw clenching.

I knew this moment was coming since the second he started barking out orders. I knew he wasn’t going to budge on my safety, especially not now that he knew I was pregnant. He’d want to keep me surrounded by guards.
Normally, I would fight, but after our conversation from before, I knew it was pointless.
“I’m not going to argue if that’s what you’re worried about,” I continued softly. “You can drop me off and-”
“I’m not leaving you at home.”
“I’ll just bake a cake or-wait, what?” I turned to him, my eyes wide and my mouth agape. “I thought-”
“Trust me, I want nothing more than to keep you safe in a tower, but he has gotten into the house before. What is stopping him from doing it again? If he gets his hands on you, Daisy, it’s game over for everyone. Ill give him whatever he asks for.”
I blinked. “No, you won’t.”
He pulled the car over to the side before turning to face me. His eyes were as wild as I’d ever seen them, and a million emotions were running across his face at the same time.
“I would give him the entire fucking world if it meant that he wouldn’t hurt you. I’m the pack weak link, princess, and that’s only because I have you. The safest place you can be right now is by my side, because if anything happens to you, even for a fucking second, I will lose my goddamned mind.”
I stared into his eyes, searching for any sign of deception, but I already knew I wouldn’t find it.
Kai never lied… at least not to me. There was no reason for him to do so.
I nodded slowly, finally understanding why he put so much effort into keeping me safe. It was for his benefit as much as it was for mine.
“What’s the plan then?” I asked. “How do we even know if he’s in here?”
His phone rang, cutting through the silence. Damien’s name flashed across the screen.
“Damien should be able to tell us.” He picked it up and put it on speaker. “What did you find?”
“He’s in the pack.”
My blood ran cold. Goosebumps danced across my flesh and my heart hammered wildly in my chest,
“You can’t know for sure, right?” I asked hesitantly. “It’s not like he signed in his name at the entrance to the pack.”
“He didn’t, but the Alphas did,” he explained. “Before you come into our territory, you have to declare how many people are coming in. When you do arrive, we do a secret headcount. We analyze both numbers for

discrepancies.”
“And?”
