Scarlett and I ended up in my old bedroom; the one I stayed in when I was still intent on fighting the mating bond.
It was amazing how much had changed in such little time.
A year ago, I was in my pack, deluding myself concerning my relationship with Lucas. I was telling myself how much he loved me despite how he refused to claim me outside. Now, I was with my mate, I was fucking Queen and I had a child on the way, and all of that was being threatened.
“I should have figured it out,” Scarlett mumbled, causing me to glance up at her.
She was pacing the length of the room, her hands framing her face as she cursed aloud. She looked almost crazed with her movements.
“What are you talking about?” I asked.
“The picture. If I’d figured it out earlier, we would have been able to stay on top of things. I had one fucking job-”
“There was no way you would have known.”
“His mother was sitting in my pack, Daisy,” she hissed. “I sent out the pictures to people, I was asking questions. I should have known to go back a few years but I was so focused on recent children that I missed it.”
“This isn’t your fault.”
“Yes it is!” she yelled. “I’m in charge of that pack. Kai wouldn’t have made the same mistake. He could tell she was lying. I couldn’t!”
I clamped my lips shut as I realized that this was much bigger than just finding out who Roger was. This was about her being in charge.
“You’re not Kai,” I said softly. “You don’t need to have the same strengths that he does. You’re Scarlett. You have your own superpowers.”
She snorted. “Like what?”
“You’re empathetic for one. You know how to connect with the people. You’re easy to like, easy to get along with. People trust you quickly.”
She rolled her eyes. “That isn’t going to help me as Alpha.”
“Actually, it will. Have there been any riots since you took over?”
She didn’t answer, but I didn’t need her to. I already knew the answer to that.
“My pack is filled with the most stubborn people on the planet. They were planning riots while Kai was there,

but they haven’t executed any with you because for some reason, they like you. You’re not going to be another Kai, and you don’t need to be. You’re doing a good enough job on your own.”
She chewed on the inside of her cheeks before sighing deeply. “I’m sorry, I’m just very worked up.”
“It’s fine, we all are,” I assured her. “It’s a very complicated situation. It’s unlike anything we’ve ever dealt with before.”
She lowered herself onto the bed next to me. “I just can’t understand a few things.”
“Like what?”
“Why Roger would treat other hybrids the way he was treated. If he hates his mother for her actions, then one would assume that he wants to protect them from that same kind of behavior. Why would he subject them to the same treatment?”
I’d never thought about it that way until she mentioned it, but I quickly realized that her words made a lot of
sense.
These kids were much younger than he was in that picture. I’d assumed that he took those children from her families to save them from the same behavior that he suffered, but it was clear that wasn’t the case.
“You’re right,” I said rising to my feet. “What if we have this all wrong?”
“How?”
“What if he’s not working alone? It all makes sense now. That’s how Lucas got the picture, that’s why he buried it in his pack. He wasn’t leaving it for Roger, he was leaving it for his mother. He wanted her to know that Roger had continued what she started.”
I cursed aloud.
“We need to warn Kai!”
I rushed to the door and pulled it open, but stopped dead in my tracks as a silver barrel was angled right in between my forehead.
“I’ve got to say, you’re much smarter than I give you credit for, Daisy,” the old woman drawled. “I thought that if anyone would figure it out then it would be your mate.”
She’d ditched the frail old woman persona she was putting on.
I had no idea where she’d managed to hide the gun she currently pointed at my head, but it didn’t matter because my eyes weren’t fixed on her, they were on the man standing directly behind her.
His hair was completely gone, but his eyes still held the same anger and disdain that I’d seen the last time he stood in my kitchen. He was wearing plain clothes and a baseball cap was shoved into his pocket.
The smell of blood filled the air and I didn’t need to glance at his hands to know they were stained.
“The guards-”

“Gone,” he cut me off easily. “It was stupid of you to keep werewolves right outside the door. It easy to get rid
of them.”
“Step back!” his mother ordered. “And keep your hands where I can see them.”
I slowly raised my hands and took a step back.
