Chapter 149

We put the crib where Scarlett suggested but she didn’t return to look at it.

I could tell that her abrupt disappearance bothered Daisy, but it felt like progress to me. That she’d even come up here unprompted was a huge step for her.

She returned back to the living room after. I found her seated on the couch, a bowl of popcorn in her hands and a shitty sitcom playing on the TV. Her eyes stared straight at the screen but it was clear she wasn’t watching it.

Daisy sat next to her, casting wary glances at her through the corner of her eyes.

“Is she still with you?” Damien’s voice asked in my mind.

I never left my wall down. I was getting too comfortable.

“Yes, she is. I’m surprised you didn’t ask sooner.”

“Trust me, I knew where she was at every moment. I’ve been in contact with her all day. She isn’t responding to me anymore.”

“She’s in front of me,”

“Good, I’m outside your door.”

I couldn’t help but snort.

I opened the front door and sure enough, Damien stood there with his hands shoved into his pockets. He

looked exhausted, there were lines etched into his forehead and his eyes drooped as if he were a second away from crashing.

“You look like shit,” I told him simply.

He shrugged. “I’ve had better days.”

“When last did you sleep?”

“Shouldn’t you be more worried about your pregnant mate?” He drawled, hands crossing over his chest.

“I’m an excellent multitasker.”

He rolled his eyes and tried to side step me, but I blocked him. He raised a brow, a silent question in his eyes, but I said nothing, merely stepped outside with him and shut the door behind us.

“Kai, I don’t have time for this,” he sighed. “I need to see her and take her home.”

“You need help, Damien, just as much as she doe. What did you even do today?”

“Is this fucking necessary?”

“Yes, it is, now answer the goddamned question.”

He huffed. “I was working.”

:

“You haven’t taken a break since this shit happened. You need a break.”

“I don’t-”

“It was not a request, Damien. It was an order.”

He gritted his teeth in annoyance, eyes flashing, but there was nothing he could do. I was his Alpha and he couldn’t refuse a direct order from me.

“You might want to rethink that order,” he said finally. “I found something.”

“I don’t want to know-”

“It has to do with-”

“I don’t fucking care, Damien,” I snapped, cutting him off. “Whatever you found, leave it in the office. I’ll go through it in my own time. Take Scarlett and go home. Rest, do whatever the fuck you need to do. This isn’t healthy.”

He pursed his lips tightly.

“You’re like my brother, Damien, and Scarlett is family. I don’t want you to hurt each other, especially not

now.”

He didn’t say a word, he barely even acknowledged me.

I sighed, stepping aside for him. He walked into the house without another word.

It’d take a while for his bruised ego to soothe long enough for him to realize that I wasn’t trying to pull rank for the fun of it. Until then, I had no issues dealing with his silent treatment and anger.

Damien whispered something to Scarlett that had her rising instantly. They said their goodbyes, hugged Daisy and left.

As soon as I shut the door behind them, Daisy spoke. “Do I want to know what you told him outside?”

“No.”

“Is it safe to assume that we aren’t going to hear from him in a while?”

I hesitated for a moment before nodding. “Yes.”

She sighed deeply, leaning against the wall with her hands crossed. “One would think that voter everything, we’d be living picture perfect lives.”

“Nothing is ever picture perfect.”

“True,” she mumbled. “I wish it were.”

I crossed the length of the room and stopped in front of her. She lifted her eyes to me and I could see the exhaustion as clear as day reflected in her irises.

Wrapping an arm around her waist, I placed a soft kiss on her hair. “Don’t we all?”

We returned to the couch, the sitcom still playing in the background. She lay curled on my lap, fingers tracing small circles over my chest. Neither of us spoke, but then again, we didn’t need to.

I waited until she was fast asleep, her soft snores drifting up into the air before I picked her up and carried her into our room. She stirred but never woke, even as I tucked her gently into bed and climbed in next to her.

I pulled her close, reveling in how perfectly her body fit against mine. I pressed my nose into her hair, taking a long inhale.

“Her scent is starting to change,” my lycan said to me. “People will notice soon.”

“I know.”

Underneath her scent was something soft, like a budding flower.

“She’s going to need protection. We’ve made many enemies over the years, some of whom will won’t hesitate to try and hurt her.”

“No one is hurting her,” I growled. “She is going to be safe. No one knows about the pregnancy for now. There’s nothing to worry about.”

I knew he didn’t agree, but he didn’t say anything else.

I tugged her closer still, arms wrapping tightly around her and closed my eyes.

When I woke up the next morning, I knew something was wrong.

The air felt different, colder maybe, and the bed felt wrong. My eyes flew open and I immediately realized what was wrong… Daisy was out of bed.

I threw the covers off, tossing the pillow she’d put in her place to the side and grabbed a shirt. I headed down the stairs, following her scent towards the kitchen but she wasn’t there.

I combed every inch of the house, from the guest rooms to the bathroom, but it wasn’t until I stepped out into the driveway that I realized one of the cars was missing and she was gone,
