I knew Kai would never let me do what I wanted, so the minute I realized I woke before him, I knew it was my only chance.

Getting out of his hold was not easy. Kai held onto me like he was scared I’d disappear. It was a miracle that I managed to leave the house before he woke up.

“Are you sure this is a smart idea?” My wolf asked. “What good is it anyway? We should be home with Kai.”

“We have to do this.”

“Do we really? How many people willingly try to befriend their mate’s ex?”

I exhaled deeply.

I’d explained this over a million times to her already. Perhaps she was becoming more lycan because the wolf I knew would’ve understood, hell, she would’ve pushed me to do it.

“They were friends, and I don’t want to take that away from her.”

I managed to get the place she was staying by pure dumb luck. I found it a few days ago among some pack documents that Kai kept on his phone.

I took a deep breath as I stood in front of the simple brownstone and knocked.

There was no response at first so I waited one minute, then two. I knocked again, a bit louder this time, and once again, there was no response. I turned to leave, figuring that she wasn’t awake yet, after all, it was just a little after seven.

“I was convinced I was seeing things at first, but it’s actually you,” Eva said, voice thick with disbelief as the door opened behind me.

She stood in her doorway wearing white pajama shorts and a black tank top. She was beautiful, even when she looked like she rolled out of bed. It was hard not to feel small next to her. She was a full blooded lycan and I

was…

“You’re Kai’s mate,” my wolf snapped. “Now fucking act like it.”

I shut her out quickly, focusing my attention on Eva who was watching me warily.

“I’m guessing you didn’t just come here to stand at my door,” she drawled. “Do you need something?”

“No, I just… I wanted to make sure there were no hard feelings.”

She crossed her arms over her chest. “About what?”

“The other day at Scarlett’s house. She really didn’t want any visitors. I’m not going to apologize for respecting her wishes.”

“Then why are you here?”

“Honestly? I dont know,” I laughed awkwardly. “I feel like we’ve gotten off the wrong foot. You and Kai were friends long before any of this, and I don’t want to stand in the way of that. I don’t want to be the reason he loses one of his friends.”

For a minute, she said nothing, merely stared at me as if I’d grown a third head. The longer I waited for a response, the more stupid I felt about coming here in the first place.

“I should go-”

“I wasn’t trying to ignore you, I just didn’t know how to respond.” She sighed, running her hands down her face. “Do you want to come in? I was just making tea.”

I nodded. “Tea sounds nice.”

She stepped aside to let me in and I couldn’t help but marvel at the beautiful interior. It looked like

something straight out of a magazine. The couches were pristine and the glass chandelier in the middle of the living room was gorgeous.

“My dad owns the place,” she explained as she noticed me staring. “We used to spend our summers here.”

“I’m guessing that’s how you met Kai.”

She nodded. “I suppose so. I’ve known him all my life.”

She headed into the kitchen and I followed behind her. She took out two mugs and grabbed the steaming hot kettle,

“Can you get spoons from the cupboard please? It’s the top left one.”

I did as she asked and retrieved two spoons while she brought out the milk and a plate of tea cakes,

“Does Kai know you’re here?” She asked.

“No, but I left him a note by the bed. He should see it when he wakes up.’

She just hummed before placing everything in a tray and gesturing for me to follow her.

The air was thick with tension, but that was to be expected. This was an unusual situation and neither of us knew how to navigate it.

“I was going to apologize today you know?” She said suddenly. “That was why I make the tea cakes. They were a peace offering.”

“Really?”

She nodded. “I realize I was being a bitch. I was scared that I was losing everything to you. It doesn’t make any sense but that’s how it was. It was stupid-”

“It’s not stupid.”

She gave me a small smile. “I hope you still consider them a peace offering.”

I picked one up and bit into it. “It’s a really good offering.”

She laughed loud.

I wanted to say more but there was a frantic knock on the door. She raised a brow in my direction but I just shrugged.

Rising to her feet, she went to open the door while I finished up my cake and took another one.
