She spent the next hour outlining every single detail I needed to know about the mating ceremony.

Thankfully, it wasn’t much different from the usual werewolf cemonies. There were a few peculiarities, but nothing I couldn’t handle. I took notes, and by the time she was done, the xcitement regarding my ceremony was reignited in me.
So what if this wasn’t real? It wasn’t like I could have a do–over wh another mate. Werewolves and lycans mated for life. I made my bed already, the least I could do was make sure I had a blissful sleep in it.
“That’s everything about the ceremony,” she said finally. “Any questions?”
I shook my head. “None at the moment.”
“Good, because there’s something else you need to know.”
Her voice had taken a serious tone, making me sit up immediately.
Our earlier conversation was filled with humor and light hearted jokes, but there was no sign of amusement on her face right now. Whatever it was that she wanted to say… it was serious
“I don‘
know how much Kai has told you regarding lycans and their mates, but they can be of any species.”
I nodded. “He mentioned something like that.”
“The thing is, a mating ceremony is a lot of strain on you if you’re not a lycan, especially because it practically joins you to him. Most people skip the ceremony and just mark and consummate each other, but Kai is King, and he has to do it the traditional way.”
“Please get to the point,” I cut her off. “You’re making me anxiou.”
“A lycan’s blood is poisonous to wolves.”
I blinked, waiting for her to laugh and tell me it was a joke, but she never did. She just sat there, watching my reaction.

“How?” I asked once I finally found my voice. “How come we don’t know this?”
She shrugged. “Do you think that if werewolves knew about that they would leave us to rule in peace?”
I didn’t need to respond… the answer was clear.
Fear made people irrational. They would have revolted a long time ago, and it would have ended with the massacre of my species. There was no way we would win a war against the lycans
Even if they didn’t massacre, I wouldn’t put it behind some wolves to try and kidnap a younger lycan, incapable of defending themselves and use their blood for weapons.
“How does the poison even work?” I asked. “Do I take a drop and trop dead?”
“Of course not.” She burst out laughing.
It was an odd sound considering the kind of conversation we were having, but it was so light hearted and soft, that I couldn’t help but smile.
“It sort of weakens your body first. It depends on the quantity. If you take just a little, then you might be weak for a few days, but if you take a lot, then chances are you’re going to end up de..”
That sounded fucking terrifying.

The knowledge that anyone in this pack could kill me without een touching me. All they had to do was find a way for me to ingest their blood. It set me on edge.
“Why are you telling me this? I could sell you out.”
“You won’t.”
She sounded so sure. I envied the trust she had in me.
“As for why I’m telling you; it’s because part of the mating means you have to mark each other. I don’t know how it works with the poisoned blood.”
I ran my fingers through my hair with a sigh. “Thank you for letting me know.”
“Thank you for letting me be a part of your mating ceremony. I’ve always wanted to organize one, but I haven’t found my mate yet, so-”
She trailed off, shrugging awkwardly as she pulled herself to her feet.

I couldn’t help but watch her, wondering just how old she was. She looked to be my age, but I knew that lycans aged very differently. Unlike us wolves who barely lived to two hundred, a lycan could live to be five hundred years old. There were rumors of some living much longer.
“I can tell you have a lot of questions,” Scarlett spoke, snapping me out of my thoughts.
My cheeks tinged pink. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to stare-”
She waved me off. “It’s fine, I don’t mind. I can answer your questions when we go out today.”
“When?” my brows furrowed. “Where are we going?”
“You’re about to be Queen, Daisy. It’s my job to show you the ropes and give you a rundown of your duties. Don’t worry, it isn’t anything-”
She stopped short once she opened the door and I didn’t need to turn to know why.
Kai’s scent filled the room, sending shivers down my spine and causing the hair at the back of my neck to stand on edge. A part of me itched to turn back to see him, but I forced myself to look busy in the room.
“I was just about to knock,” he drawled. “Can I borrow my mate f

a moment?”
I mumbled a small goodbye without looking back and heard her footsteps recede until they were barely audible.
