Chapter 151

Chapter 151

He didn’t say a word throughout the car ride.

He kept his eyes trained on the road, his mouth set in a firm line.

I watched him nervously out of the corner of my eyes, trying to gauge his mood from his expressions but his face betrayed nothing. Even his emotions were muted down our bond. It was as if he’d put up his wall to keep

me out.

We arrived at home and he was yet to speak. I reached for the handle when he suddenly locked the car.

My heart raced in my chest but I forced myself to relax, knowing that he wouldn’t hurt me, not even in the deepest troughs of his anger.

I turned to him. “I’m guessing you want to talk about it now?”

He didn’t speak immediately so I took it as a cue to continue.

“I didn’t like being dragged out of the house like that. It was a bit embarrassing. I’m an-”

“You can’t leave the house like that, Daisy,” he said simply, not even glancing my way. “Not after everything that’s happened.”

“I left a note-”

“A note doesn’t fucking cut it and you know that,” he hissed out, running his fingers through his hair with a sigh.

“Kai, you can’t stop me from ever leaving the house.”

He turned to me, eyes exhausted but also worried.

“I’m not trying to stop you, I just need you to tell me when and where you’re going. I couldn’t find you. I thought something had happened. I was fucking worried. I went through every possible scenario for what could have happened to you and your wall was down. I had to track your phone-”

“You did what?” I exclaimed but he waved me off.

“That’s a fight for another day and you know it. You can’t just disappear, Daisy.”

I didn’t even have it in me to argue because I could feel his emotions slipping through a crack in his wall. I could feel the desperation and helplessness. The threats may have been dealt with, but that didn’t mean he

wasn’t still worried.

“I’m sorry,” I said softly, reaching out for his hand. “I just had to do it before I chickened out, and I didn’t know that you’d be on board with the idea.”

“Trust me, I’m not,” he snorted. “But if it’s what you want then so be it. I couldn’t care less about what happens

to her.”

I gave him a small smile and squeezed his hand softly. “I’m safe, Kai, you know that, don’t you?”

He sighed. “I do know that, but I also know that you’re pregnant and your scent is changing.”

It was?

I lifted my shirt to my nose, but I couldn’t smell anything different.

Kai’s soft laugh cut my thoughts off. “You won’t notice it, at least not yet. A well trained lycan may. I have a lot of enemies, Daisy, and if I don’t know where you are at all times, then I can’t keep you safe.”

“Enemies that would try to hurt your child?” I asked and he shrugged.

“I honestly don’t know, but I also don’t want to find out.”

He unlocked the car after that and we made our way inside.

The first thing I did was head to the room to take a shower. While changing, I caught sight of something sticking out from under the bed.

As I retrieved it, I couldn’t help but shake my head. It was the note I’d left for Kai. No wonder he was so worried. I rumpled it up and tossed it into the trash before focusing on the pile of documents on the table.

Just because I wasn’t going to the pack house didn’t mean I wasn’t working. There was so much to be done, and unfortunately, pack politics didn’t stop just because we did.

I was in the middle of an extension request when my phone buzzed.

My brows furrowed at the unknown number and a stab of fear went through me. It brought back memories of Roger’s calls and how many problems it brought with it.

It took me a second to remind myself that Roger was dead and this was probably something innocent.

“Hello?” I said softly once it connected.

“Your majesty, I was hoping you’d pick up. Pardon my manners, it’s Alaric.”

I let out a sigh of relief once I heard his name and my shoulders sagged. “You don’t have to call me Your Majesty, Daisy is just fine.”

“Well, Daisy, I apologize for calling you like this. There is a minor problem and I thought you’d appreciate me talking to you before speaking to the King.”

The tension that bled out came rushing back. My mind began to conjure up the worst possible scenarios. Alaric wouldn’t be speaking to me first unless he thought it was something I needed to calm Kai down over.

“What is it?” I asked once I’d managed to gather my courage,

“We had a visitor at the pack border this morning. They tried to turn him back but he wouldn’t go without a fight. I was called because the Alpha and Beta were unreachable.”

I swallowed deep, waiting for him to continue.

“It’s your father, and he wants to speak to you. He won’t say a word to anyone else.”
