Chapter 152
:
Kai was just as surprised as I was when I told him about my father.

He was in his office, going through some documents of his own. He’d barely glanced at me when I walked in but as soon as I spoke, he went deathly still.
“I’m going to see him,” I told Kai.
It was no secret that he didn’t like my father, and left to him, I would have nothing to do with the old man, but I’d be damned if I didn’t at least try to see what this was all about.
I continued. “You can’t convince me not to.”
“I wasn’t going to. I was going to say that I’m coming with you.”
I frowned slightly. “I don’t know if that’s a good idea. You’re not his biggest fan and you threatened to kill him the last time you were together.”
He barked out a laugh. “The threat still stands, Daisy, believe me, but as long as he controls his words, we won’t have a problem.”
I pursed my lips, not completely sold on the idea, but as he stood to his feet, I knew there was nothing I could do to change his mind. Besides, I knew I’d profit immensely from having him next to me during what I knew would be a difficult conversation.
Alaric was waiting for us in the foyer of the pack house.
There was a worried expression on his face that I hadn’t seen since when we originally had to deal with Lucas.
“Did something happen?” I asked but he shook his head.
“Your father is this way.”
There was something he was hiding, and I didn’t know what until we walked into the room where my father was waiting. He’d said my father looked bad, but he grossly underplayed the situation. He was almost unrecognizable.
One of his eyes was swollen shut and she had bruises all over his body. He’d obviously taken a shower and was wearing fresh clothes, but there were traces of dirt under his fingernails and in the ends of his hair which was much shorter than the last time I saw him.
One of his legs was wrapped with a bandage and the spoon in his hands shook as he tried to feed himself.
“What the hell happened to him?” I hissed towards Alaric. “Did one of the guards do this?”
He shook his head. “He showed up on our doorstep like this. He won’t say a word to anyone. I had a doctor look him over but since he won’t say a word, we don’t know how bad the injuries are. Perhaps you can get through to him.”

Chapter 152
:
The longer I stared at my father, the more horrified I was.

He was one of the strongest men I knew. I couldn’t think of anyone that I knew would do something like this
to him… except maybe a lycan, and I knew my pack, they’d never do this.
I took a step further into the room. His head snapped up as soon as I did.
“Hi, dad,” I said softly, making my way over to the couch next to him. “How did you get here?”
He shrugged. “I walked.”
His voice was hoarse, as if he hadn’t spoken in a while.
“I want to talk to you alone.”
“No,” Kai cut in before I had the chance to speak. He took the seat next to me and levelled my father with a bored look. “I don’t know what the fuck happened to you that put you in this state, but I am not leaving you alone with her.”
“She’s my daughter,” dad hissed.
“And she’s my mate,” Kai said simply. “You can either speak to both of us or you can leave.”
I thought he was being a bit hard. My dad was proud, and the chances of him choosing to leave were high.
I knew it wasn’t my job to coddle him, especially after how he’d treated me since mating with Kai, but he was still my father, and I couldn’t shake that feeling of responsibility I had towards him.
“Fine,” he grumbled after a minute of silence. “It was some rogues.”
I blinked twice, wondering if I heard him right. “How did rogues get into the Northern pack.”
“They weren’t in the pack. They were in the woods.”
“Did they ambush you?” I asked, sitting up straighter.
If rogues were ambushing random wolves, then that left us with a lot to worry about. It meant that no one was safe, and seeing as the Northern pack was under our protection… it was our problem.
“I wasn’t ambushed.”
His words only left me more confused. “I’m going to need you to explain what happened.”
He sighed, his eyes fixed on the ground. “Look, it doesn’t matter. I need your help.”
“With what?”
“I need a hundred grand.”
I couldn’t help but scoff. “Where the hell am I supposed to find a hundred grand? You haven’t spoken to me in months. You can’t just come in here and ask me for a hundred grand like you have money with me.”
