Daisy’s father was the most despicable piece of shit I ever had the misfortune of laying my eyes on.

He was a slimy fucking coward and if I had my way, he’d be out on his ass. The rogues would be doing us a favor by killing him.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t make the decision for Daisy, no matter how badly I wanted to. I turned to her, waiting for her to say something in response to her father’s admission, but she remained silent, her eyes staring intently at the old man, roaming over his wounds.

“Don’t let that sway you,” I said softly to her. “He’ll heal. He’s a wolf. He’ll be as good as new in a few days.”

She sighed. “It doesn’t matter, Kai. They’ll simply do it again.”

“And? That isn’t a bad thing.”

I could sense her displeasure through the bond. “What makes you think they won’t come after us next? They want their money, I don’t think they’d particularly care about where they get it from.”

“They’re rogues. They’re masters of survival. They know better than to attack a lycan pack.”

“He’s my father Kai, and we both know that I don’t have a hundred thousand dollars. If you say no, I won’t hold it against you, I promise. It’s your choice.”

She cut off the mind link with me abruptly, not giving me a chance to respond.

Everything in me screamed to send him out on his ass, and I wanted to… so fucking badly. Unfortunately, I knew that despite Daisy’s words, she would feel responsible if anything were to happen to him.

One of her most amazing qualities was her kindness, and her ability to give multiple chances. It was also the same thing that would be the death of her if she wasn’t careful. Not everyone deserved a second chance, especially not the bastard in front of me.

“When do they need the money?” I asked.

She let out an audible sigh of relief at my words.

Her father seemed pleased. He sat up a bit straighter. “I was supposed to pay it back last week but they gave me two extra days. If you give it to me, I’ll-”

“No,” I cut him off. “If I’m paying for this, I’m going to hand it over myself. I don’t trust you.”

He frowned. “I can handle it.”

“Coming from a man who owes a hundred grand? What the fuck did you even borrow the money for in the first place?”

He went silent at that, choosing instead to stare straight at the ground. I waited for a response, but he didn’t give me one, and I knew he probably never would.

“I don’t know how someone like you gave birth to someone like her,” I muttered, rising to my feet. “I’ll pay your debt, but I’m not just handing you the money for free.”

He lifted his head. “I’ll pay you back when 1-”

“I don’t trust your schemes. You don’t have a hundred grand and you’re not going to get it. You’re not Beta anymore, you don’t even have a job.”

He gritted his teeth in annoyance but knew better than to snap.

It wasn’t a dig, it was merely the truth. He was living life like he was still Beta. All the Northern pack companies were closely linked to the hunters. With the hunters gone, the pack finances were crumbling quickly. It would take a while to stabilize things. For now, they relied on the palace.

“What do you want from me then?” he asked. “Since you already know that I can’t afford it.”

“That’s easy. You’re going to work for me until every last penny is paid for.”

His eyes widened in shock, then anger. “I’ll be working until the end of my life!”

“Good.”

He stood to his feet instantly but quickly regretted it. His face contorted in pain and he grabbed at his leg that was wrapped in a bandage.

I ignored his cries of pain and kept speaking. “Eighty percent of your salary will be taken from you every month. You will do a job of my choosing.”

“That isn’t fair,” he ground out.

“Would you rather deal with the rogues on your own?”

The tips of his ears turned a light shade of pink as embarrassment coursed through him. He had no other options and he knew it.

I glanced over at Daisy, trying to gauge her reaction to all this, but she remained stoic faced and tight lipped. She barely even glanced my way.

“Do we have a deal?” I asked

He hesitated for a moment before nodding. “Whatever.”

“Good, a contract will be brought over. I know better than to make an agreement with you without proper proof. If you don’t adhere to your clause, you’ll never see the outside of a jail cell. Am I clear?”

He smiled at me tightly. “Crystal.”

I turned to Daisy, gesturing for her to come with.

She stood to her feet quietly and headed towards me. She brushed by her father to do so, and as she did, I heard him speak in a voice that was deathly soft it was almost inaudible.
