Kai returned a few minutes later, and by then, my thoughts were already consumed by the mysterious person I was about to be compared with.
He handed me my iced coffee, and despite how good it was, all could muster was a small smile. There was no logical reason for me to be bothered by the possibility of there being another woman. I was the one who reminded him at every moment that this wasn’t real.
“You’re jealous,” my wolf teased. “It’s quite amusing.”
“Shut up.”
She lived to antagonize me.
I thought having a wolf would be like having a friend who was always there for you, but in reality, it was like having an annoying sister who was privy to every thought and emotion you felt. Sometimes I wanted to shove a sock in her mouth.
“Excuse me?” she exclaimed, clearly annoyed. “If anyone of us needs a sock shoved into their mouths it’s-”
I broke off the connection between us before she could finish her sentence. I felt her annoyance flare, but all it did was make the corner of my lips tug upwards.
I’d reward her with a run later on, but for now…
“Is it possible for lycans to have more than one mate?” I asked aloud and out of the corner of his eye, Kai glanced to me.
“It’s hard enough for us to have one mate. I have never heard of lycan having multiple.”
I hummed.
Whoever that female was, she clearly wasn’t his mate, but she was someone to him if the children knew who she was.
I cleared my throat before continuing. “So most lycans just mate with whoever?”
“Not exactly.” He sighed deeply. “Lycans value the mate bond. Its the greatest thing to us after the goddess. Most lycans have partners they choose to stay with and have children with but to actually complete a mating ceremony is rare with a partner who isn’t your mate.”
“Did you have someone you planned to stay with and have children?”
I tried to keep my voice casual, but I failed woefully. The eagerness and curiosity was as clear as day in my tone, and Kai heard it too because he immediately pulled the car to a stop and turned to me.
“Is there something you want to ask, Daisy?” he asked. “I’ll answer any question you have.”
I shifted awkwardly in my seat, trying to avoid looking at him. “was just curious.”
“Of course you were.” He was biting back a smile as he sipped from his cup. “The answer to your question is no, by the way. I’ve never wanted to just settle down with someone.”
Somehow, I found that hard to believe.
“Why not? You’re the Alpha. You’re king, and you need an heir.”
He shrugged. “My father mated with my mother as a business arrangement. He needed an heir, her family was well connected. He treated her like a punching bag the entire time they were together.”

Chapter 18
His jaw clenched with anger as he spoke, and my heart squeezed inside my chest.
“You’re not your father,” I whispered softly.
He gave me a wry smile. “I’m not, but there’s a bad taste in my ruth when it comes to arranged matings”
“But that’s what you’re doing with me.”
He shrugged. “Ironic, isn’t it.”
I couldn’t bring myself to ask any more questions after that. It fe wrong.
We sat in complete silence as Kai finished his drive around the pack and took me back to the pack house. I couldn’t help but note that he didn’t take me to his house, but instead of asking about it, I just got out of the car as quickly as I could.
He didn’t drive off until I was through the front doors of the pack house.
I rushed into my room, shutting the door behind me and exhaling deeply.
This mating thing was far more complicated than I thought it would be, and I knew that the chances of me getting out unscathed were slim. Still, I couldn’t bring myself to walk away despite knowing it was the smart thing to do.
I placed the new phone on the nightstand to charge and took out the old one. My hands shook as I pushed the power button, watching it spring to life.
Messages flooded the phone, and I couldn’t help but read a few of them. Some mocked me about the video, some were flat out derogatory, and there were a few who were concerned about my whereabouts.
The ones that caught my eye however were the two newest messages. They came in early this morning around six. They were from Lucas and my father.
Lucas‘ message was short: YOU FUCKING BITCH!
It could be about a range of things, so I ignored it and looked to my father’s message. It was also three words: How could you?
I’d barely opened it when my phone began to ring and my father’s name flashed across my screen. I hesitated for a moment, unsure of whether to answer it or not.
After a long mental war, I swiped up.
“Hello?” I spoke, my voice low and soft.
