Chapter 19

My fingers shook after hanging up.

I’d never done that to my father before. I’d never cut him off on. He was the Beta of the Northern pack. He was the second most powerful man in that pack. It was practically unheard of an I’d treated him like he didn’t matter.

I could see his seething face at the back of my mind: his clenche jaw, his clenched fists and the heavy rising and falling of his chest. If I were in front of him, he’d have whipped me with the back of his hand. He did it the first time I dared to speak

back at him.

I remembered the metallic taste of blood in my mouth.

The phone buzzed again and I jumped, my heart lurching in my chest. Dad’s name flashed across the screen, but I couldn’t bring myself to pick it up. I just stared at it as it rang until the screen went black.

If he wasn’t upset before, he definitely was now.

The phone pinged with a text and when I glanced at it, my blood ran cold.

Dad: Do you think I can’t reach you unless you pick up your phone?

You’d be surprised to find that I have allies everywhere.

I put the phone on silent and shoved it into the drawers before another text could come in.

Slowly sinking to the ground, I tried to calm my breathing.

He isn’t here,my wolf tried to assure me. He can’t hurt you.”

I know that.

Do you, really?she asked. If you did, you wouldn’t be hyperventilating on the floor. Maybe you can talk to Kai-

No.

She exhaled deeply. I could feel her annoyance rising. He might be able to help.”

There is nothing to help. I’ll let him know about the call because it’s important to our plans, but he doesn’t need to know anything else.”

She let out an exasperated sigh. Do whatever you want, Daisy. I give up on you. You have a mate now, someone who is actually willing to help you, and you’re tossing him aside.

That’s not true.

Isn’t it? He’s not Lucas.

I was taken aback after her words. How could she even think of them in the same sentence. Kai had been better to me in the past few days than Lucas had been to me in the entire time we died.

Of course he isn’t. Why would you even say that?

Because you’re punishing him for Lucasactions. He’s trying had, Daisy. He wants to be with you. The least you could do is try to meet him halfway.

I didn’t respond, not because I couldn’t, but because she was rig.

It wasn’t that I thought he was Lucas, it was that I didn’t know how to trust someone again after what Lucas had done. I had no idea how Kai would react to the video if it ever came to him have to tell him at some point, but for nowI couldn’t bring myself to do it.

I wasn’t sure how long I sat there in my room.

After the conversation with my father, I couldn’t bring myself to interact with anyone. Scarlett knocked on the door at some point during the day asking if I was up for some more planning. but I pretended to be asleep and remained silent until she

left.

My stomach grumbled from hunger, but the idea of leaving the oom didn’t sound so appealing. What if one of his allies was watching and looking out for me?

A short but firm knock on my door snapped me out of my thoughts. I did what I’d done all day and stayed silent hoping they’d disappear, but they didn’t.

Instead, I heard a very familiar voice. I can hear your heartbeat, Daisy. I know you’re asleep.”

There was nothing inherently sexual about that statement but my heart raced and goosebumps danced all over my skin.

You haven’t eaten a thing since breakfast. It’s almost eight. I’m going to stand out here until you open the door. I know you don’t want that, so why don’t we skip that part?

Murmuring a few choice words under my breath, I made my way over to the door and unlocked it.

Kai’s lips curled up into a victorious smile but I ignored it, focusing instead on the large tray in his hands.

There was a plate of steaming hot pasta, fruits and ice cream. It was far too much for me to eat.

Thank you for checking up on me, but I’m not hungry,” I lied and my stomach took that as a cue to grumble loudly.

My cheeks burned a bright shade of red as he raised a brow.

I’m gassy,I lied again.

He rolled his eyes and brushed past me, making his way into the room. He placed the tray on the bedside table and instead of leaving like I thought he would, he perched on the dresser, hands crossed over his chest.

Eat.

I can’t eat while you’re staring at me.”
