Daisy liked to pretend that she was untouchable, but she had the most expressive face I’d ever seen.
There were a few rare days where she managed to mask her expression, but today was not one of those days. It was clear something was bothering her, and I hated that I couldn’t tell wh it was.
Scarlett told me about her isolation earlier in the afternoon, and rushed back from where I was at the border. I wanted to barge into her room and demand a response, but I knew enough to know that it wouldn’t work, so I spent the last hour making my mother’s amazing carbonara pasta.
She was so hungry that finished it all within ten minutes.
“Does this have anything to do with our date this morning?” I asked and her cheeks turned a light shade of pink.
“It wasn’t a date… and no.”
I snorted. If she wanted to delude herself into thinking it wasn’t date then that was fine, but we both knew better.
“Then what is it about?” I asked. “Did someone say something to you?”
“What? No, of course not.”
“I’m all out of options, Daisy. I need you to tell me what’s wrong
She swallowed deeply, hands fiddling in her lap. Her eyes were honed in on the patterns on the floor as if they were the most interesting thing in the world.
“I spoke to my father today.”
I let that sink in.
I’d expected her to speak to him at some point, especially after what I’d told her about him.
“How did it go? Did you confront him about the pictures?”
She snorted. “I didn’t get the chance to. I didn’t even remember it in the moment. He was furious with me. I guess our plan worked because he knows I’m here.”
My brows furrowed.
Shouldn’t he be happy that his daughter was safe and alive? The alternative was being killed by rogues.
“What else did he say?”
She shrugged. “I hung up before he could say anything more. I know I should have listened to him, but I just couldn’t, 1-”
“You don’t have to do anything,” I cut her off.
Fuck.
I hadn’t stopped to think about how hard this would be on her.
The revenge was her idea, yes, but she had no idea what it would take. That pack was her family, and it wouldn’t be easy to stand against them.
“They’re not going to let this go so easily,” she said softly. “He’s going to try to reach out to me again.”

“You don’t have to respond.”
“He said he has allies, Kai. He has more ways to reach ine if he wants.”

The sadness in her voice lit a fire inside of me. I’d be damned if let her feel unsafe in my pack. She was my mate, and I was going to do everything possible to make sure she felt safe.
“Pack a bag.” I told her, rising to my feet.
Her brows rose. “What? Why? Where are we going?”
“Your other clothes will come tomorrow. Just take the essentials.
I began to leave when she grabbed my arm.
It was the first time she’d ever initiated contact with me and mylood roared with the urge to hold her. My lycan raged inside of me. She’d barely touched my hand, and he was already roaring to attention.
I shoved him back with all my strength and tried to focus on anything other than the feel of her small hands on me, or the scent of her perfume as she stood too close.
“What am I packing for, Kai?” she asked. “If you don’t tell me, I’m not going anywhere.”
“My home.”
She took a step back. “What? No, I can’t-”
“Why not?” I asked, crossing my arms over my chest. “Give me one good reason, and if you say something about us being fake, I swear by the goddess, I will take you over my fucking knee.”
Her cheeks turned a bright shade of red, but she didn’t dare speak. Instead, she shuffled on her feet, glancing everywhere but at my face.
“Pack your bags, or would you rather I do it for you?”
She shook her head violently. “Of course not. I can do it myself. just don’t understand why I have to pack? I’m fine here.”
I stared at her, waiting for her to say she was joking, but it was clear she was serious. I couldn’t help but laugh humorlessly.
“You just told me less than five minutes ago that your father fucking threatened you. What did you think I was going to do?
think I was going to just wave it off?”
Did
you
She didn’t speak, but the answer was clear in her eyes.
I groaned aloud. “What kind of assholes have you met, Daisy? I’m not going to just let a threat go unchecked.”
“He makes a lot of threats, he never really goes through with them.”
“Is that supposed to make this better? That your father makes threats?”
She clamped her lips shut immediately. “I’ll go pack.”
“Yeah, do that. I’ll be waiting outside for you.”
