“Where are we going next?” I asked as soon as we got into her ca

“It’s a surprise.”

She seemed too excited about the surprise. It put me on edge.

“Any hints?”

“Nope.” She grinned. “Don’t even bother asking, I’m not telling. We’ll be there soon.”

I held up my hands in mock surrender. “Fine.”

“Good, now, are you going to tell me what it was like at your new home or are you going to make me ask?”

I turned to her with raised brows. “You seem very interested in my sex life with your cousin.”

She faked a gag. “I’m trying to ignore the fact that he’s my cousin right now so I can give you good female advice, please don’t remind me.”

I couldn’t help but smile.

If Scarlett and I had met on better terms, we would have been fast friends. Right now, there was a wall between us. I wasn’t sure if it was my doing, or because of the fact that I was practically using her cousin.

If I ignored it long enough, I could pretend it wasn’t there. I could pretend that there wasn’t a secret looming over my mind, and she was just my

friend.

“Nothing happened between us.”

“Clearly,” she snorted. “I have excellent smell. I’d have known if anything happened the moment I saw you today.”

I hadn’t thought about that yet, but now, thinking about it had my cheeks turning beet red.

“Kill me now,” I mumbled and she laughed.

“It isn’t that bad, I swear. No one will comment on it.”

“They don’t need to. Their eyes will say enough.”

She didn’t bother denying that.

She stopped in front of a beautiful building with glass walls. There was no sign on it and the glass wasn’t see through so it wasn’t until we walked through the doors that I realized we were at a boutique.

“More shopping?” I asked but she shook her head.

“Not quite. We’re here to get your mating dress.”

“Can’t I just wear something from my closet?”

“Of course not!” an offended voice exclaimed from behind me. Your mating ceremony is a once in a lifetime experience. You need something…. Perfect.”

I blinked at the extravagant looking woman in front of me. She wore a flowing yellow dress with a large hat atop her head. The hat had feathers sticking out of it, and her neck and arms were adorned with jewels.

She ushered me towards the back of the store and showed me ry after row of ivory and white dresses. I already had a headache just from standing there.

I learned that the eccentric woman called herself Mrs. M. Despit her flair from drama, she was a rather nice woman. She asked questions to determine what kind of dress I’d like and showed me a couple that fit my style before ushering me into the dressing room.

I tried on dress after dress, and each one was more gorgeous that the last, but none of them seemed right.

After the fourth one, I was ready to just take one and give up. It didn’t matter anyway, the ceremony was all for pretense

anyway.

“I have one more,” Mrs. M told me. “If you don’t like it then we can stop, okay?”

I sighed. “Sure.”

She clapped excitedly before disappearing into the back. When he returned, it was with an off–white dress.

She walked into the dressing room with me and helped me lace up the corset at the back.

In all honesty, I didn’t have high hopes for it, but when I turned to look at myself in the mirror, my breath caught in my throat. The torso was practically built for me. The sweetheart neckline showed enough cleavage to be cute but not enough to be trashy. The intricate designs on the bodice left me breathless and the skirt was made of the softest fabric.

“I’m guessing you like it,” Mrs. M teased. “I told you we’d find you something. Do you want to go show your friend?”

Before I could speak, noise from outside filled my ears. I couldnt make out the words, but I could hear raised voices, and one of them clearly belonged to Scarlett.

I rushed out, not even caring to put on my shoes first and found Scarlett standing where I’d left her, but she wasn’t alone. There was a strange man standing with her.

His hair was a mousy brown and his eyes were a bright hazel that sparkled with mischief. He was a smirk on his face which was a sharp contrast to Scarlett’s frown, plus, he was tall enough that she had to crane her neck to look at him, but that didn’t deter her. Her hands were on her hips in defiance.
