It took a second for me to gather my wits and take his hand.

His hand was rough, but not as callused as Kai’s. It was large too, or maybe mine was just small.

Damien smiled, his eyes alight and curious as he took me in. His handshake was firm but warm. I expected some display of power, but there was nothing but warmth in his eyes.

“I meant what I said about the dress,” he said as he pulled his hand back. “It’s beautiful, and Kai will love it. I should know, I’ve been his friend for

years-”

“No one cares about your opinion,” Scarlett snapped harshly. “You shouldn’t even be here.”

I was shocked by her outburst. The Scarlett I knew was kind and gentle with everyone. I’d never seen her speak to anyone like this. Whatever was going on between them was deep rooted because even her eyes were stony.

Damien turned to her, his hands crossed over his chest. “You called me back to the pack.”

“Because Kai wanted to see you. I didn’t expect you to follow me into a dress shop. You never even responded to me.”

He shrugged. “I didn’t need to. There was nothing to say.”

She let out a frustrated growl. Her cheeks were bright red and her eyes were wild with annoyance, anger, and something softer… something vulnerable. It was the most emotion I’d ever seen on Scarlett’s face at a stretch.

Something had happened between her and Damien, and against my better judgment, I was curious.

Scarlett turned to me before I could analyze their interaction further. “Are you taking the dress, Daisy?” I’d momentarily forgotten why we were here in the first place.

“Yeah,” I nodded. “I think so.”

“Great, let’s get you out of it and paid for.” She grabbed my arm, dragging me towards the dressing rooms.

She paused for a moment to glance over at Damien over my shoulder.

“Kai is the one who wanted to see you, not me. You can find him at the pack office.”

“I think I’m having fun here,” he drawled, crossing his arms over his chest. “I might just stay-”

Her voice was harsh as she cut him off. “Don’t.”

As she pulled me into the dressing room, I could have sworn I saw a flash of disappointment in his eyes.

I didn’t say a word as Scarlett helped me out of my dress, or as we exited the dressing room. Damien was gone by then, and she let out a sigh of relief once she noticed.

“You don’t like him much, do you?” I asked once we had paid for the dress.

“Who? Damien?” I nodded. “He’s an ass. He’s the most pompous arrogant, annoying being on the planet.”

I couldn’t help but laugh at her description. “He seemed fine.”

“That’s because you don’t know him yet. I’ve known him all my fe. He’s been friends with Kai since they were babies. Their mothers were best friends.”

She opened her mouth but promptly closed it. “I think you should ask Kai about that. It’s pack business and I don’t know

if…”

She trailed off, not looking at me.

It took me a second to realize what she meant, and once I did, the tips of my ears turned a light shade of pink.

She didn’t trust me.

I didn’t blame her though. I was a stranger, and I wasn’t here for the right reasons, but in the past hour, I’d somehow managed to forget that. It was just a rude reminder that I probably would never fit in here anyway.

“I didn’t mean any harm, Daisy,” she tried to explain but I shook my head.

“I know, it’s fine, I promise,” I lied through my teeth.

The words tasted like ash on my tongue and my throat felt dry as I spoke, but I forced a smile on my face. I knew what I’d walked into.

“Is there anything else we have to do today?” I asked her.

“No, but I was hoping we could grab lunch together after.” She glanced over at me, eyes hopeful. “It’s okay if you don’t want to. I’d completely understand.”

“I think dress shopping took most of the energy out of me.”

Her smile fell and she quickly looked away. “I understand.”

She drove in silence, but the air was thick with her regret… and mine.

“It’s not her fault that she doesn’t trust you,” my wolf said softly. You haven’t given her a reason to.”

“I haven’t had the opportunity.”

“Well she just gave you one. If you don’t stop this woe is me parade soon, you’re going to be stuck with no friends, and in case you missed the memo, Daisy, you’re going to be here all your life.”

She cut off the mind link without another word, and despite how I felt, I knew she was right.

“We could always have dinner at home,” I offered up.

Scarlett turned to me sharply. “Are you talking to me?”
