Chapter 26

Today was the most hectic day I had in a while.

With the mating ceremony coming up, the entire pack was on edge. I’d triple checked the security and had the guards on edge since yesterday. No one could understand why I was being so rigid with it, I’d heard whispers and most of them. chalked it up to me being overprotective but if only they knew.

I didn’t know Daisy’s father personally, but I knew of his reputation. He wasn’t a loud man, unlike his Alpha. He was the quiet sword at the side. He barely spoke, but whenever he did, it was with intention. His threats weren’t just threats, they were promises, and I’d be damned if I let him get close enough to Daisy to hurt her.

“Is this a bad time, Alpha?” a voice cut through my thoughts and turned to find Alaric standing by the doorway to one of the many meeting rooms in the pack office.

I was in the middle of briefing the generals on security for the ceremony. We’d gone over it already yesterday but I needed to make sure we had everything down to a t.

“Not at all.” I turned to the generals. “I think we’re done here.”

I could see the relief on their faces. They rushed out before I could change my mind.

Alaric crossed the length of the room, sitting on the couch that they’d just vacated. “Your anxiety is rubbing off on the pack, your majesty.”

“You’d be anxious too if you were just about to get mated.”

“Unfortunately, I think this is more than mating jitters.” He leaned forward on his elbows. “This wouldn’t have anything to do with a certain she-wolf would it?”

Leaning back in my chair, I feigned indifference. “if you have something to say, Alaric, now is the time to say it.”

“I’ve noticed that you’re not inviting any of the other packs. Not even her family is going to show up for the ceremony. If I’ve noticed, then the pack members will soon.”

“I don’t hear a question.”

He sighed deeply. “I want to make sure you’re being clear headed about this. Do you know why her family isn’t coming? If there is something we need to know then-”

“I know everything there is to know. You have nothing to worry about.”

“I’m worried about you-”

“Are you speaking as my advisor?”

“I’m speaking as a father and a friend,” he whispered softly. “I don’t want you making a mistake because of the mating bond. It isn’t always reliable. Not all mates are meant to be together.”

I stood to my feet sharply, effectively ending the conversation.

I understood where he was coming from, and I appreciated his concern, but if he said one more thing against her, I couldn’t promise that I’d be able to hold my lycan back from taking control of the situation.

“Daisy is not the enemy here,” I said simply “I have everything der control

“Is that why you’re not using the proof I brought to you against the Beta? Do you know how long we have looked for proof like that to help us against that pack?” he asked, rising to his feet You’re not thinking clearly, Kai, and that is

understandable. She is your mate.”

“This conversation is over,” I cut him off.

He frowned in annoyance, but bowed low. “As you wish, your majesty.”

“You may leave now.”

It was clear he wanted to say more, but he wisely chose to shut his mouth and walked out of the room, shutting the door behind him.

Once he was gone, I tugged at my hair in frustration, letting out groan. If Alaric was asking questions, then others were too. I just needed to get this mating ceremony done with as soon as possible.

I headed back to my office, determined to just lock myself in and focus on my documents, but as soon as I got to the door, I knew something was up.

For starters, my door was left ajar, and I made sure to lock it before I left. There weren’t many people who would walk into my office without warning.

I twisted the knob and pushed the door open only to find someone seated on my chair, their legs crossed on my desk as they tossed peanuts into their mouth.

“I was beginning to wonder when you’d be here. It was getting rather boring.”

I stared at my oldest friend with a mix of annoyance and amusement. “Get your feet off my table, Damien.”

He groaned aloud. “You’re no fun.”

I walked over to him, pushing his feet off my desk. “How did you get in here?”

“I made a copy of the key the last time I was here. You were being very secretive about this place. I was beginning to wonder if it was secretly a sex dungeon.”

I stared at him blankly.

It wasn’t the worst thing he’d said to me by a long shot.

For a moment, we were silent, then he stood to his feet and pulled me into a hug.

“I missed you man,” he said, clapping me on the back. “It’s been months since I’ve heard from you.”

“The doors to the pack have always been open to you. You’re my Beta. You should never have left.”

He smiled dryly. “You know why I had to leave, Kai. I couldn’t stay here anymore.”

I tried not to involve myself in his personal affairs, but I knew enough as to why he packed up and disappeared. I never asked for the details because I believed that when he was readyshare, he would reach out to me.

“I was surprised when I heard that you needed me,” he changed the subject swiftly “Is everything alright?”
