I turned to her, shocked by the outburst. I hadn’t expected her to actually tell me what happened between them.
I hesitated for a moment before speaking. “When?”
“Eight months ago. He left the next morning.”
My eyes widened in surprise.
She smiled sadly, refusing to meet my eyes as she made her way into the kitchen and pulled out a pan from the drawers. I opened my mouth to speak, but the words wouldn’t come out. I had no idea how to comfort her.
“You don’t have to feel bad for me, you know?” she said softly. “I knew what I was getting into with him. I knew he wasn’t looking for anything serious.”
“That doesn’t make leaving a good thing. How did it even happen?”
“We were drunk,” she sighed deeply. “We’d been dancing around the whole idea of being together but neither of us wanted to act on it. We’ve known each other for too long, it wasn’t a smart idea. I guess the alcohol loosened our inhibitions.”
“Did you regret it?”
“No, I couldn’t bring myself to. I was in love with him. It didn’t matter that he left my bed in the middle of the night and disappeared for months after. If I could do it all again, I probably wouldn’t change a thing.”
I understood that feeling.
When you got something you’d wanted for so long, that despite the consequences, it still felt worth it.
“I know that probably sounds stupid,” she continued, but I was quick to cut her off.
“No, it doesn’t. I completely understand how you feel.”
“I doubt it,” she snorted. “Did you have sex with someone who left you?”
She laughed under her breath, not knowing how close to home her words hit.
“No, but I had sex with someone who betrayed me,” I said.
She stilled.
Lucas’ betrayal was still fresh in my mind, but unlike Scarlett, I wasn’t sure if I’d do it all again. Sure, it brought me here, and I was happier here than I had been in a while. It brought me to a mate, but I couldn’t allow myself to be with him completely for fear that my past would come back to haunt me.
“Do you want to talk about it?’ she asked.
I thought about it for a second before shaking my head. “I’m no eady yet. It’s still too fresh.”
She nodded in understanding. “Does it have anything to do with why you left your old pack?”
I turned away from her at that, unable to stand the curiosity in 1 eyes. “Do you need any help with the food?”
From her sad smile, it was clear she had her answer, and she noted the change in subject, but thankfully, she didn’t seem interested in pushing it. Instead, she gestured to the fridge.

Chapter 27
“Could you help me slice up some vegetables?”
“Of course, I’ll get right on it.”
We worked in silence, the weight of our respective admissions hanging in the air between us.

We held each other’s secrets, and a part of me was terrified. I didn’t have a good history when it came to people keeping my secrets, and if she were to let it slip for any reason, it would ruin my reputation.
“You wouldn’t have to worry about that if you just told Kai yourself,” my wolf whispered. “He’ll know what to do.”
“I can’t, and you know that.”
“Why not?”
I didn’t have a reason… at least, not one I could admit to myself.
“I’m almost done here,” Scarlett spoke up, snapping me out of my thoughts. “Can you help me set the table? After that you can go clean up if you want.”
“Are you sure?” I asked, eyeing the pile of dirty dishes in the sink. “I can get started on those.”
“No need,” she waved me off. “There’s a dishwasher for a reason. Go, Daisy, I’ve got this.”
I reluctantly pulled myself away from the kitchen, taking plates for the table along with me. It wasn’t in my nature to leave a kitchen messy. I couldn’t count how many times dad had slapped me across the face for leaving a dirty dish.
We had a dishwasher as well, but he was adamant that I wash them by hand to ensure that they were ‘cleaned well.
I set up the table for Scarlett, Kai and I, and was about to leave when I heard the front door creak open. Voices filled the air and a warm feeling settled in the center of my stomach when I recognized one of the voices as Kai.
