Damien walked out of the dining room, and it wasn’t until I heard the front door slamn shut that I finally let out the breath I was holding.
I’d stood in front of a lycan.
I had no idea how old Damien was, but judging by his aura, he’d been around for a while. He could’ve snapped me like a twig in seconds. A month ago, I would’ve never stood in front of someone who posed that much of a threat.
“I don’t know whether to be impressed or furious at what you did,” Kai spoke, grabbing my attention.
He hadn’t moved from where he stood by the dining table, his hands crossed over his chest.
“Why would you be upset?” I asked. “I was defending Scarlett.”
“I know that, but Scarlett can defend herself. You don’t need to step in front of a lycan, especially not one who has been trained as a warrior since birth.” He pushed off the table and stepped closer to me. “It was impressive, don’t get me wrong. but don’t ever do that again.”
“Would he have hurt me?”
“No.” Kai didn’t even hesitate before he spoke. “He has far too much respect for me to do that.”
“Then what’s the problem?”
He exhaled. “The problem is that whatever went on between the two of them involves a lot of emotions. Damien wouldn’t deliberately hurt you, not even when his emotions are heightened, but he might do so accidentally.”
A part of me felt warm at his concern, but another was upset.
If Scarlett were my cousin, I wouldn’t hesitate to defend her against my friend. There was no way he couldn’t say that he had no idea there was tension between them.
“I wouldn’t have needed to if you did something.”
His brow rose. “Really?”
“Why did you bring him here? Why are you even still talking to im after what he did?
“What did he do, Daisy?”
I fell silent and mentally face palmed.
He seemed genuinely oblivious. I just assumed that since Scarlet was able to tell me so easily that she’d already toll Kai
“I think
you
should talk to Scarlett about it.” I mumbled once I found my tongue again. “It isn’t my story to tell
“You’re the one berating me for staying out of it I should at least know what’s going on”
“No, you shouldn’t.” I cut him off. “You don’t need to know the details to defend your family. It’s the least you could do. I expected better from you.”
The words were out before I could stop them
Kai stood there in shock at my outburst, and without waiting for him to speak. I turned on my heels and rushed up the
stairs.

In the span of an hour, I stood up to two very powerful lycans. It was almost as if I had a death wish or something.
I slammed the door shut behind me, trying to catch my breath. The room felt hot and stuffy all of a sudden. I tugged at the neckline of my shirt, hoping it would help… it didn’t.
It wasn’t until I pulled off my clothes and stood under the ice cold shower that I felt any form of relief.
I stayed there for far longer than I needed to. By the time I returned to the dining room, a full hour had passed and everyone was seated at the table like a picturesque family.
Kai sat at the edge of the table, and there was a seat open next to him that I knew was for me. Scarlett sat on his other side and Damien sat right next to the open seat. There were dishes filled with food on the table, but no one made a move to touch it.
“Finally, you’re here,” Damian said as soon as he sighted me. “I thought we’d have to drag you down.”
“Were you waiting for me?” I asked incredulously.
“What do you think?”
“Stop it,” Scarlett snapped. “We couldn’t start lunch without you. Sit down, please.”
I searched her face before glancing briefly at Damien. She must have understood the question I was asking because she gave me a soft smile and a barely there nod.
It was all I needed to take the open seat, my hands folded neatly in my lap.
“Thank you for waiting,” I said finally. “I appreciate it.”
The sound of scraping utensils filled the air, but no one dared to speak. The atmosphere was so tense, it could be cut with a butter knife. Still, everyone seemed content to ignore it. If this was going to be a usual occurrence, I wasn’t sure I’d be joining them for meals.
My hands shook violently as I lifted forkfuls of pasta to my lips.
I had to fight the urge to fill the silence each time.
Scarlett finished first, and once she was done, she disappeared into the kitchen. Damien left his food half eaten and disappeared out the front doors as well, leaving Kai and I alone. was about to make up a stupid excuse when he spoke.
“You were right”
I turned to him with furrowed brows. “I don’t understand what you mean
“I should have stepped in for Scarlett, I’m sorry”
I didn’t know how to reart to that. I could count on one hand the number of times I’d ever heard an Alpha apologize, much less the lycan king. It was such a foreign concept that for a moment, I just stared.
