The mating ceremony was in two days, and as the days drew closer, the more nervous I got.
Scarlett came over early this morning, and after breakfast, we went to check on the venue.
It looked like something straight out of a fairytale. On a normal day, I would’ve been emotional about it, grinning from car to ear, but things had been so quiet lately and I was worried. Dad hadn’t called or texted since the initial threat and it was very unlike him.
“Are you alright, Daisy?” Scarlett asked as we drove out of the venue. “You’ve been suspiciously quiet.”
I shrugged. “I just don’t have much to say.”
She sighed deeply, staring at me for a moment before pulling the car to a stop on the side of the road. “Okay, this is the only time I’m going to do this. It feels like a betrayal of Kai as it is, bu I consider you a friend, Daisy, and I want to help you.”
My brows furrowed in confusion. “I don’t understand.”
“If you don’t want to go through with this, you can back out now she said simply.
I opened my mouth to speak, but she held up a hand to stop me
“Let me finish, please.”
I quickly clamped my mouth shut.
“Kai wants to be with you, that much is clear, but I need you to want this too. If you need help leaving, I’ll help you. I can get you out of this pack before anyone notices. No one has to know
“Kai will know.”
She smiled sadly. “True, and he’ll probably be pissed at me for a while, but he’ll get over it, and he’ll understand why I did it. I don’t want you to feel trapped.”
“I never said I did.”
“You don’t have to say it. It’s written all over your face. You look ke you’re a second away from puking.”
I didn’t know how to explain to her that I wasn’t worried about the mating ceremony. I was at first, but I quickly realized that in terms of mates, Kai was a fucking good choice. He was kind to me, he was gentle, and supportive. It would take some time to get used to being mated to him, and his position, but I could’ve done way worse.
I was worried about Lucas… about the past I’d left behind that plagued my waking thoughts.
“I don’t want to run,” I said finally. “Thank you for offering.”
“Are you sure? For moral reasons I can’t ask again.”
The corner of my lips quirked. “I’m sure. I just want to go homeow. I’m tired.”
It was obvious she had more to say, but thankfully, she decided against it and turned the car back on.
The rest of the drive was filled with silence and I couldn’t help by glance anxiously at my phone and the last text messages 1 got from dad.
She didn’t ask to come in, she just dropped me in front of the house and drove off. Kai was at work meaning I was home
alone.

I made my way over to the back of the house, stopping in front of the pool. I didn’t have any swim suits, so I stripped down into my underwear and dived in. The water was ice cold, but I didn’t care. It was like a breath of fresh air and for a moment. I was lost in the motions, letting the water pull me whichever way it wanted.
I wasn’t sure how long I swam from one edge to the next. I didn’t stop until my arms ached and my lungs burned, and even then, I didn’t get out of the water, I just lay back with my eyes closed and floated over the surface.
“I’m so lucky that Kai isn’t here right now or he’ll probably gouge my eyes out for seeing you like this.”
I lost my bearings for a split second and sank to the bottom of the pool. By the time I resurfaced, Damien was standing by the doorway leading to the house, his hands crossed over his chest.
“I didn’t mean to scare you,” he offered, stepping closer to the water.
There was no use hiding under the water, seeing as he’d already seen me floating, but for some reason, I wrapped my arms around myself.
“I didn’t hear you come in.”
He shrugged. “Good, considering I spent years learning to be a spy.”
“You did?”
He nodded. “My father was the pack general. He needed to make sure I was equipped to take over from him. Turns out Kai needed my skills elsewhere.” He stopped at the edge of the pool. Are you going to get out anytime soon?”
I shook my head. “I think I’m good here. I’ll be in later.”
“I already saw you in your bikini if that’s what you’re worried about.”
“It isn’t. I’m a werewolf, I shift in front of my pack.”
“Is it the scars?”
I went deathly still. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“We all have them, you know?”
In one swift move, he pulled his shirt off his body. His entire torso was littered in scars. Most of them had been covered by tattoos, but if you looked closely enough, you could make them out. He turned, letting me see the jagged ones on his back as
well.
“My father was very enthusiastic about me learning to be a spy,” he said softly. “If he could hear me approach him, I’d be whipped. He thought it was great incentive to learn. What’s your story?”
I hesitated for a moment before getting out of the pool and sitting by the edge.
I didn’t have as many scars as he did, my dad never wanted to leave marks on me. He claimed it reflected poorly on him as a father and it would make me undesirable, but there were moments he lost his temper.
“He liked to use his belt,” I said simply. “It wasn’t often, but it happened”
