Chapter 32
I waited by my door, listening for the sound of footsteps.

During our conversation, I saw regret in Kai’s eyes, and I’d hoped that he’d come to my room. I waited for hours, trying to assure myself that if he came, it meant he wasn’t disgusted by what I told him, but as the seconds ticked by, I quickly realized that wasn’t the case.
Awareness must have already sunk in, and he must’ve realized by now that I wasn’t fit to be his Queen.
“Don’t say that,” my wolf whispered. “You don’t know how he feels.”
“Why else hasn’t he come? I’ve waited all night.”
“Maybe he doesn’t know how. Maybe he’s embarrassed.”
I snorted. “He is the King. He doesn’t get embarrassed.”
She sighed softly.
I hated being the one to ruin her fantasy, but it was better to expect the worst than look forward to good and be disappointed. The most logical outcome was that he didn’t want me here, so I packed.
I took clothes, ignoring the guilt. If I could, I would have left them behind, but there was no guarantee that I’d find someone else generous enough to get me clothes. In fact, finding Kai in itself was a miracle. It was rare for someone to find a second
mate.
I packed the essentials and a few things I could pawn off for money while on the run in a duffel bag and kept the bag at the foot of the bed. I took a long shower, knowing it might be the last time in a while that I got the privilege.
When sunlight streamed in through the window, I sighed, knowing my time in this pack was up. I hoisted the duffel bag over my shoulder. It was a bit heavier than I expected, but I couldn’t afford to leave anything behind.
I adjusted it until I didn’t feel like I was going to fall over from the weight and made my way down the stairs.
I’d hoped for a clean break. I planned to write a note on my phone and leave it on the table. The last thing I wanted was to see him and see the horrible expressions on his face, but fate had never been kind to me.
He was standing in front of the kitchen sink with his back to me. I tried to hurry past, but I must have made a sound because within seconds, he turned.
I froze like a deer stuck in headlights as his eyes roamed over me before settling on the duffel bag in my hands.
“Where the fuck are you going?” he hissed, his jaw clenched.
“I’m leaving, I told you yesterday.”
“Like fuck you are.” He walked around the counter until he was sanding in front of me. “Is this what you do after every argument? Leave.”
I hated that he was making this difficult for me.
“I’m just trying to do the right thing, okay? I want to leave before you tell me to”
“Why the fuck would I tell you to leave? We’re supposed to be ted tomorrow.”
“I don’t know, maybe because of the sex tape!” I exclaimed, throwing my hands in the air. “I know what it’ll look like for you if it comes out. I understand if you want to protect your reputation. Besides, you avoided me last night after the talk-”

“Hold up,” he cut me off. “I didn’t avoid you. I felt fucking sick to my stomach that I forced you to admit those things to me. I didn’t want to smother you. I don’t want you to leave.”
His words were as clear as day, and there was no ounce of decep on in his eyes, and yet, I couldn’t bring myself to believe it. Perhaps it was years of being told otherwise, but I just couldn’t imagine that he would stand by me after hearing that.
“I made you breakfast,” he said softly, gesturing to the counter behind him.
It was only then I realized the elaborately set table. There were smiley faced pancakes and fruits sliced up neatly in a bowl. Right beside it was-
“I also got you flowers,” he added. “I was going to come to you and beg on my fucking knees if I had to.”
He closed the remaining gap between us and gently took the duffel bag from my hands. It landed on the floor in a heap, but
I couldn’t even glance at it, my attention was wholly focused on the man right in front of me.
I didn’t deserve him, that much was certain.
I must have done some amazing thing in my past life for the goddess to even think of giving him to me.
He reached out slowly, like one would with a wounded animal, and when I didn’t shy away, he cupped my cheek gently, brushing his thumb over it slowly.
“I don’t know how many times you need me to repeat it, princess, but I will. I’m not going anywhere. You’re my mate. You could stab me in the fucking heart and I’d still come to you.”
Tears gathered behind my eyes. “Don’t say that.”
“It’s the truth. I don’t know what they did to you to make you believe that you don’t deserve this, but you do. You deserve someone who is going to stick with you through the hard parts.”
“So you don’t think I’m a whore?”
“Fuck no,” he hissed. “You gave something precious to a bastard and he took advantage of that. It doesn’t make you a whore.”
I sniffled, leaning into his touch. It was like a weighted anchor, keeping me from floating into thin air.
