Chapter 36
I paced the length of the entry hallway, running my fingers through my hair in frustration.

As soon as I saw the door ajar, I knew that something had gone wrong. I smelled her blood next, and immediately started making calls. The blood was still fresh, so she couldn’t have gone so far.
Damien told me that he was on his way with Kai, and honestly, that was exactly what worried me. Kai was usually a calm person. He never lost his cool, but this? This was his mate we were talking about.
I dialed the head of pack security again.
“Please tell me you know something,” I groaned. “Kai will be here any minute.”
“I have my men combing every inch of the pack. It would help if we knew exactly who we were looking for. Do you know who took her?”
“No. I don’t even know how long she’s been missing.”
He sighed. “Have you changed your mind about wanting us at the scene? Maybe we can find something to help us.”
“If you don’t mind having Kai breathing down your neck every five seconds then come right over.”
I couldn’t keep the sarcasm out of my voice.
“We’ll find her.”
I didn’t get the chance to respond because the sound of an engine caught my attention. I hung up the phone and braced myself for Kai’s anger.
I felt it before I saw him.
It was as if he brought a storm cloud with him that shifted the entire atmosphere. My lycan was on edge, prepared for any potential lashing out from him. When he stepped out of the car I knew to stay out of his way.
His eyes were much darker than usual meaning he was right on the brink of losing control. Weirdly, Damien felt like the safer option between them. I didn’t even realize when I scooted loser to his side.
“I’ve called the head of pack security,” I said as soon as he was within earshot. “They’re combing the pack looking for her.”
“They won’t find her that way,” he cut me off. “Did you miss the ucking tire tracks outside the gate?”
Shit.
I did miss it.
He turned to Damien. “Tell security that they’re looking for an SUV and someone from her old pack. This has that slimmy bastard written all over it. I want all pack exits secured and locke down. No one goes in and out of this pack until she’s found, and no one fucking sleeps!”
He stormed into the house, leaving Damien and I to do as he’d structed.
A few weeks ago, I would’ve rather buried myself in the sand than ever work with Damien, but in this moment, our
differences didn’t matter.
We stood there in silence, making the calls we needed to. Everyw seconds. I found myself glancing over at him. Time was good to him, his hair was longer and his beard had grown out a le. The tattoos also added to the enigmatic presence he always carried.

“I wasn’t eye fucking him,” I mumbled. “And I’ve called everyone I can. I’ve done everything possible save for actually going out there to look for her myself.”
“This isn’t about you going out there to find her. This is about you staying away from Damien. I already told him to leave you the fuck alone but clearly I need to tell you the same thing.”
“You don’t need-”
“I can’t have my Beta running off again because something goes wrong between the two of you, so for the love of everything holy, stay the fuck away from each other and keep it in your fucking pants.”
I frowned. “That’s rude.”
“I don’t give a shit about rude. My mate is missing and you’re hele lusting after-”
“Kai!” Damien snapped, a bit too harshly.
Kai turned to him, brow raised, head cocked to the side. I knew that look, I’d seen it a few times, but never directed at one of
Damien noticed it too because he immediately held up his hands in surrender. “It’s not a fight, man, I just wanted to tell you that we may have found something about how they got in. One of the guards at the east border was found trying to escape the pack.”
Kai didn’t wait for any more information, he just got into his car and drove off leaving Damien and I alone.
The tension stretched thin between us.
Before, we would’ve been able to laugh it off, or say something stupid. Now, there was too much history. Sometimes I wondered if things would’ve been different if we hadn’t crossed that line.
“He didn’t mean what he said,” Damien began softly. “He’s just stressed.”
“I know. I just hope we find her.”
“We will.”
He sounded so sure, that I felt inclined to believe him.
“We should probably go after him before he kills the guard. I can have my car here in-
“Don’t worry, I brought mine.” I took out my keys from my pocket. “Unless you have a problem with being alone with me.”
He sighed. “I don’t, Scarlett, you know that.”
“Actually, I don’t, seeing as you were the one who ran.”
He pursed his lips. “Do you really want to do this now?”
I did, so fucking badly.
I wanted to know why, but I also wasn’t selfish enough to do it wile Daisy was missing
“No,” I said finally. “Just get in the car.”
