Relief filled me.

For the first time since Lucas took me. I actually found myself resisting the urge to smile.

I knew it was only a matter of time before Kai put the pieces together but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think there was a possibility that Lucas would get away with this.

“How many are they?” Lucas asked.

“I don’t know, but I saw a couple cars.”

“Fuck!” he cursed aloud before turning to me. “Come here.”

When I didn’t move, he grabbed me by the shirt and pulled me to my feet. I nearly tripped over myself trying to keep up with his long strides, but he didn’t care. He just pulled me over to the front window and pulled back the blinds.

There were two cars in front of the house that I could see, and standing in front of one of them was Kai. I couldn’t make out his expression, but I knew it was him.

“He’ll think twice about storming into the house when he knows have you at knifepoint,” Lucas said, his voice suspiciously pleased. He shoved a phone into my hands. “Call him.”

“What?”

“Did I fucking stutter?”

I had no idea what Lucas had planned and that worried me. A cornered animal was at its most dangerous.

With shaky fingers, I dialed Kai’s number. It only rang twice before he picked up.

“Is this Daisy or Lucas?” Kai asked, his voice cool and harsh.

I took in a deep breath, relief coursing through me at the sound of his voice. “It’s me.”

“Are you safe?”

Before I could respond, Lucas snatched the phone out of my hands. “She is for now, but how long she remains safe is up to you.”

Kai laughed humorlessly.

The sound reminded me of nails on a chalkboard, and when he poke, his voice was all jagged edges and rage.

“You’re not getting out of here alive, Lucas. How quickly your death comes depends on how soon you let my mate out of there. You’ve had your fun.”

“I haven’t even started,” Lucas snarled. “Call your men off or I’llt her throat.”

Taut silence stretched over the line. “You should know better than to threaten a lycan’s mate.”

“She’s my ticket out of here. Let me get to the border and I’ll hather over unharmed.”

“I can’t do that, Lucas.”

“And why not?”

“Because you signed your death warrant the moment you made her bleed in my house. Princess, duck.”

I did as he asked, not even bothering to hear anything else.

The next few seconds felt like something straight out of a movie

One moment, everything was fine, and the next, everything we haywire. I heard screaming as a loud bang filled the air. The force from whatever caused the sound threw everyone back me included. Luckily, I was already on the ground, my hands over my head so it didn’t do much.

I slammed into the wall and a scream made its way out of my throat when I landed on my already injured shoulder. Smoke filled the air, and for a moment, I couldn’t see a thing.

“Find the girl!” Lucas screamed. “Don’t let her get away!”

I quickly realized this was the only chance I’d have to get away so I swallowed down the pain and dragged myself to my knees. I didn’t know where I was going, but I kept my hand on the wall, hoping it would lead me to the door.

There was so much noise and commotion happening around me, but as the smoke began to clear, I saw the door. It was wide open. I rushed to my feet, running towards it when a hand wrapped around my ankle, pulling me to the ground harshly.

“Where do you think you’re going, bitch!” Lucas hissed. “If I’m not leaving here alive, neither are you.”

With my hands still tied, there wasn’t much I could do. I tried to kick him off, but his grip on me was tight and his eyes were wild and crazed.

He raised his knife, and I braced myself for the blinding pain that would inevitably come from being stabbed with a silver knife, but to my surprise it never came. I heard a yelp of surprise and opened my eyes to find Lucas being pulled off me by the back of his shirt.

He was lifted like a rag doll and flung towards a corner of the room.

“He’s lucky it wasn’t Kai who found him like that,” Damien drawled. “Let’s get you up.”

He grabbed my arm and blinding pain shot up my side.

I screamed.

“Shit, I’m sorry, I didn’t know you were hurt.” He reached out for my other hand, lifting me much slower this time.

“What about Lucas?”

“Someone else is handling him. I know Kai would want to take his time with him.” He undid the ropes on my wrists. “Are you hurt anywhere else?”

I shook my head. “I’m fine, where’s Kai?”

“He should be here any second. I told him I found you.”

I opened my mouth to speak but promptly shut it when I felt a esence behind me, it was overwhelming, drowning out everything else that was going on in the building. Damien gave he a small smile as he slipped back into the frenzy.

The smoke had cleared now, dead bodies littered the living room, all of them belonging to Lucas. I saw some guards hauling Lucas out the back door until the house was empty save for med my mate behind me.

I turned slowly, my knees buckling when my eyes locked with his “Hi”

“Daisy,” he managed out, his voice hoarse and tight. “I’m really tying to keep a grip on myself right now but I need to put
