He didn’t leave my side once.

He kept me tucked into his chest on the drive back home and made a show of carrying me into the house. On another day, I would’ve found it overbearing, but right now, I reveled in his closeness. It was the only thing keeping me sane.
I wasn’t the only one benefiting from the closeness though. Every few seconds, I’d see dark veins crawl up his arms, then he’d inhale my scent and it would disappear like it was never there.
“Kai.”
A soft but firm voice cut through my mate induced haze and I looked up to find Damien standing in front of us, his hands shoved into his pockets. He hadn’t changed out of his blood splattered shirt, but it wasn’t him who caught my attention, it was the woman standing behind him in pajamas with a stethoscope around her neck.
“She needs to check Daisy for injuries,” Damien continued. “You have to let her go.”
His words brought my attention back to the slight throbbing of my shoulder. My brain had somewhat blocked it out in favor of curling up in my mate’s lap on the couch.
Kai didn’t respond though and Damien sighed.
“Her shoulder is probably sprained or dislocated. If she doesn’t set it right now, it’ll heal wrong, and you know that’s going to be a bitch later.”
Kai lifted his head, stared at Damien for a second before looking away. Damien threw his hands up in frustration before turning to me.
“Talk to him,” he mouthed. “He’ll only listen to you.”
The truth was, I didn’t want to talk to him. I wanted to stay here where I felt safe and protected. I knew Lucas couldn’t hurt me anymore, but now that I was at home, the bravado had worn off and in its place was fear like I’d never felt it before.
I didn’t want to step out of Kai’s arms.
“Please,” Damien added. “You’re the only one who can get through to him.”
I turned to Kai, lifting my good hand and trailing my fingers down his arm. His head snapped over to me instantly, his eyes wildly assessing me.
“You have to let go of me,” I whispered softly. “She needs to do her job.”
He frowned. “She can do it with me here.”
The corner of my lips tugged. “You and I both know that setting my arm is going to hurt like a bitch. I don’t want you hurting her. You’re too wound up right now.”
It was clear he disapproved, but he knew I was telling the truth. He wasn’t thinking clearly enough to be able to distinguish between a real and perceived threat. He’d take her out without aking any questions, and I couldn’t have that on my
conscience.
He sighed deeply, leaning forward to press a lingering kiss to my forehead before slowly depositing me on the couch. He walked out of the room without looking back, and only once heas gone did the doctor sigh.
“I’m going to do your shoulder first because it’s the most pressing issue. Is that okay?” she asked and I nodded.
I turned to Damien who was still standing there. “Aren’t you going to follow him to make sure he doesn’t do anything

stupid?”
He shook his head. “Kai can handle himself much better than you think.”
I chewed on the inside of my cheek. “Are you sure? I wouldn’t want anyone to get hurt.”
“No one is stupid enough to get in his way… not tonight. The whole pack is on high alert. He’ll be fine.”
The doctor took a hold of my wrist and shoulder. “I’m going to need you to count to five.”
“Why?”
“It’s better if you’re prepared.”

I nodded doing as she asked. I’d barely hit three when I felt a blinding pain shoot up my spine. A loud scream bubbled out of me, but Damien was quicker and slammed his hand over my mouth, smothering the sound.
My entire arm throbbed and white dots danced across my vision
“I’m sorry,” she whispered, tying a wrap around it. “I lied about needing you prepared. I just needed to distract you.”
I understood her, but Damien? I shot him a glare and he shrugged.
“If you screamed, he’d have heard you. I couldn’t risk that.”
The doctor gave me a pill that ebbed the pain just a little, but it also made me a bit groggy. She checked me over, cleaning the cut at my temple and on my arms.
“You’re all done,” she announced. “You might want to get cleaned up.”
“Can I get the wrap wet?” I asked, gesturing to my shoulder.
She nodded. “It’ll probably be off by tomorrow anyway. You’re a wolf, Daisy, we heal fast.”
“Thank you.”
She waved me off. “Anytime.”
“Do you need help getting up the stairs?” Damien asked but I shook my head.
“My shoulder is hurt, not my feet. Where’s Kai?”
“His wall is up, but if I were to guess, I’d say he went for a run to lear off some steam. I can try to reach him if you-”
“No, it’s fine,” I waved him off. “You know our mating ceremony was supposed to be today.”
His eyes widened.
I didn’t blame him for forgetting, I did too until I saw that it was after midnight.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
“It doesn’t matter. We’ll just have to do it next month, I guess.”
