I wasn’t sure how far or how long I ran, I just kept going until my lungs fought for air and my limbs ached for a reprieve.

I knew I couldn’t be anywhere near the house while Daisy was being looked over. I needed to get a grip on my raging emotions before going back to her. She deserved someone who was stable, not someone who was one wrong move away from ripping the heads off anyone who looked at her.

“Go back.” my lycan grunted inside of me. “Mate.”

Since seeing her hurt, he’d resorted to Neanderthal like tendencies. He only spoke to me in grunts and orders, and as it was, the only two things that made any sense to him were bloodlust and Daisy.

“Not until you’re calm,” I snapped. “I need to make sure you’re not going to claim her the moment you see her.”

He grunted, but didn’t respond.

I began the long walk back to the house, and by the time I arrived, I noticed that everyone had left. The guards from earlier, the doctor, even Scarlett who I knew was lurking around somewhere.

“Took you long enough,” Damien drawled as I walked into the house. “I was beginning to think you wouldn’t return.”

He tossed me a towel and I wiped it across my face. “Asleep in your room.”

My brows rose. “Mine?”

He nodded. “I think she was waiting for you and got tired. She suck into your room two hours ago.”

Guilt speared me. I should have been there with her.

“You should go home, Damien,” I said simply. “Thank you for staying with her.”

He waved me off. “It’s fine, she’s going to be my Luna. It’s my duty.”

Speaking of Luna, if things had gone as planned, she would’ve been my mate officially. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t pissed about it.

“Have Scarlett cancel the mating ceremony,” I told Damien.

He froze, his hand on the doorknob. “She mentioned it earlier, you know? She wants to be mated to you. You can still hold it today.”

“No. She’s been through enough in twenty-four hours. Cancel everything.”

He stared at me for a moment before shaking his head. “You’re something else, Kai. Most men would jump at the opportunity.”

“I’m not most men. Goodnight, Damien.

I didn’t wait for him to finish before heading up the stairs.

So as not to wake her, I took a bath in the guest bathroom. I scrubbed off all traces of blood and dirt from my skin and nails. Once I was semi-presentable, I slowly made my way to my room being careful to not make too much noise as I walked into

the room.

My eyes were drawn to her immediately despite how dark the room was. She was curled up in the center of my bed, my pillow tucked closely to her chest. I took a step closer, wanting temprint the moment in my brain when I noticed the shirt she was wearing.

It was far too big for her, and upon closer inspection, I realized was one of mine.

I couldn’t stop the smile that tugged at my lips: my girl, my clothes, my bed.

Fuck.

I felt a surge in my chest.

I reached over, brushing a strand of hair out of her face. Her skin was so soft, her features so gentle, that I couldn’t stop myself from stroking her cheek.

She roused, a small groan leaving her lips. “Kai?”

I quickly snatched my hand back. “I’m sorry I woke you. Go back to sleep, princess.”

I attempted to leave, but her hand shot out, wrapping around my wrist. “Where have you been?”

I hesitated for a moment before lowering myself onto the edge of the bed. “I went for a run.”

She hummed, sitting up slowly. “I think I could use a run.”

“When you’re better, I’ll take you.”

I took her in, savoring her breathtaking beauty. Her eyes drooped with sleep, her cheeks were flushed, and the moonlight reflecting on her made her ethereal, like something straight out of my fantasies.

“You need to rest, Daisy,” I said, finally managing to tear my eyes off her. “I should never have bothered you.”

“Where are you going?”

“The guest room. I’ll sleep there while-”

“Why not here?”

I went deathly still.

When I didn’t respond, she continued. “I want you here.”

She had no idea what she was asking of me. To lie next to her was a dream come true, but she wasn’t in the right frame of mind to make such requests, and it would fucking kill me if she ame to regret it tomorrow.

“Daisy-”

“Please don’t make me beg,” she whispered. “Because I will, and I hate myself for it tomorrow. I came here because I wanted you next to me.”

I inhaled sharply. “Yeah?”

She nodded. “I feel safe with you, please, Kai”
