I slept better than I had in the last month and as much as I hated to admit it, I knew it had everything to do with lying next

to Kai

When I woke up, I was sprawled out on his chest. I wasn’t sure if i’d moved in the middle of the night or if he’d pulled me closer, but I wasn’t complaining. I could hear his heart beating steadily in his chest, and his fingers trailed slow lines down

my spine.

“You’re awake,” he said suddenly and I lifted my eyes to look at him.

He’d clearly been up for a while.

“How did you know?”

“Your breathing changed,” he said simply.

I waited for him to push me off him or to ask me to move, but he didn’t, he just continued softly stroking my back. It was one thing to lie next to each other because of a vulnerable night but this? It was a choice.

“I wanted to make you breakfast, but I didn’t want to wake you. I could order in if you-”

“You don’t have to baby me just because of what happened yesterday,” I whispered softly, pulling away from him. “You can treat me like you normally would.”

He stared at me for a second before sighing and sitting up straight.

“Is that what you think?” he asked. “That I’m treating you differently?”

I nodded. “You’re not always this… mushy.”

“Because you never let me.”

I frowned. “You’re the lycan king. You’re not supposed to be like this.”

“Says who?”

I shrugged. “Says me. You kill people.”

“So does everyone else,” he shrugged unapologetically. “I know what I am. I know the rumors that precede me. I don’t have

to act a certain way to prove anything to anyone. Besides, I may be all of that, but not to you… never you”

My cheeks heated from the sheer intensity of his gaze.

I wanted to refute, but I quickly realized that I had no standing.

was true that whenever he walked through the doors of

the house, he became… just Kai. I’d never seen that scary part ofim that everyone seemed to tell stories about

“I think I’ll take you up on that breakfast offer now,” I mumbledd he smiled.

“Good choice.”

He whipped up pancakes for us and sat next to me at the counte while we ate. I couldn’t help but notice that he didn’t have the usual sense of urgency he had in the mornings when he’d go the office.

“Are you staying home today?” I asked and he hummed. “I’m soy the mating ceremony couldn’t hold.”

He sighed, dropping his fork. “I don’t care about the ceremony. Daisy. I’m just glad you’re okay.”

He dropped his fork so hard that I feared it would break the plate. It clattered loudly, filling the air with a thick tension as Kai turned his attention to me.

“The mating ceremony is off.”

“What? Why?”

“Because!” he threw up his hands in surrender. “I have told you over again and yet you cant seem to understand. I didn’t do all of this because of some fucked up deal. I made the deal because it was the only way I could get you. Don’t you get it, Daisy? This was about you!”

“I didn’t-”

“I’m glad I could help you get your revenge and trust me, I’d do over again, but you’re not obligated to be with me because of a deal. If you don’t want it then you can back out now. No one will hold it against you, least of all me.”

I swallowed deeply, refusing to meet his eye. “Isn’t this the part where you say that you’re giving me time to think about it?”

The corner of his lips tugged upwards. “You’ve had enough time princess. I need you to make a choice because I need to know that you understand.”

There was no choice to be made as far as I was concerned.

I didn’t have anywhere else to go, and Kai had been good to me, better than anyone else in my life. As far as mates went, I hit the fucking lottery with him.

“Considering my last boyfriend was Lucas, this is an upgrade,” I mumbled and he laughed. He fucking laughed.

“I’ll fucking take it,” he mumbled, going back to his food.

I should have left it there. We were having a perfectly good morning, but there was something that had been gnawing at me for a while now.

“Is Lucas dead?” I asked and he went deathly still. “I never asked last night. I remember him being taken away but-”

“He’s alive, but barely.”

“Where is he?”

“In the dungeons, hanging by his wrists. He’s definitely seen better days.”

Translation: he’d been tortured.

I should have felt some form of pity or sadness, but I felt nothing I was completely numb to the subject of Lucas.

“I want to see him,” I announced,

Kai snorted. “Not a chance in-”

“I deserve it, Kai I was the one he attacked.”

“That is the exact reason you’re not going within twenty feet of m
