I wouldn’t have let go of her had she not slowly pulled out of my grip. It was the first time she allowed me hold her without complaints, and I was damned if I’d pass up on that offer. I typically had a better grip on my emotions and urges regarding her, but it was all shot to shit today.

Scarlett was in our kitchen eating some of my muffins when we finally emerged from the office. She raised a brow in my direction, silently asking if everything was okay. I gave her a curt nod.

“I’m taking her to see the bastard,” I said down our mind link.

A sound of surprise left her. “I thought you were against it.”

“I find that I can’t say no to her very easily.”

“You’re so whipped, I love it.” I could practically hear the grin in her voice. “I like seeing you like this.”

I liked feeling like this too. “We can drop you at the pack house first if you want.”

“I think I’m going to hang back and eat some more muffins. Is that okay?”

“Sure. Just lock the door behind you when you leave.”

“Will do.”

Daisy was brimming with nervous energy as I drove towards the dungeons.

Glancing at her out of the corner of my eyes, I couldn’t help but wish I had a front row view into the inside of her mind. I wanted to know what she was thinking, how she felt. She was both the most expressive and most enigmatic person I knew. Reading her was just as hard as it was easy.

“Stay next to me,” I warned as soon as I parked the car. “They can’t hurt you, but I’ll feel better if you’re with me.”

“Okay.”

As we approached the front doors, I felt her slip her hands into mine and like a fucking school boy, my heart skipped a beat. It was almost pathetic how down bad I was for her.

I’d informed the guards ahead to clear out from the dungeons. I didn’t want an audience present. Daisy deserved privacy while she met with the bastard. Only Damien was allowed to remain, and he was leaning in front of the cell.

“Are you sure this is a good idea?” he asked, eyeing Daisy who was practically gripping my arm. “You don’t have to do this.”

“I want to.” She squared her shoulders. “Does this place always shell like piss and blood?”

“Yes” Damien and I answered together.

She exhaled deeply. “Okay, I’m ready”

I guided her towards the front of the cell.

It was nothing extravagant, he didn’t deserve that. He was strung up by his arms, his entire face and body covered with bruises and crusted blood. His shirt was gone, and he wore a pair of muted brown shorts that were stained at the front with what I assumed was piss. Damien had taken good care of him.

I couldn’t help but smile.

“He doesn’t look recognizable,” Daisy whispered, taking a step closer to the cell.

I held her back. “The bars are silver. It’ll burn you.”

I nodded to Damien and he grabbed leather gloves before pulling open the cell doors. I gestured for Daisy to go in and she hesitated for a split second before moving.

I thought Lucas was asleep at first, but as our steps grew closer, he lifted his head slowly. One of his eyes was swollen shut, and the other barely opened an inch.

“Daisy?” he asked and my mate’s steps faltered. “Are you here to finish things off?”

His words were garbled and his voice was hoarse.

“No,” Daisy answered, her voice soft. “You look like shit.”

“Are you here to watch them kill me then?” he asked. “it’s what you want I’m sure.”

“None of this would have happened if you just left me alone, you know? You didn’t have to pursue me, you didn’t have to lie to me. Hell, even if you did, I didn’t care. You could’ve fucked me and been done with it, but you wanted to embarrass me, why?”

“What does it matter?”

“It matters to me!” she yelled. “We weren’t friends, we weren’t enemies, so why me?”

He was silent for a moment, and I began to think he’d passed out when his lips suddenly split into a grin and he laughed. Laughter was not a sound that was commonly heard in the walls of the dungeon.
