My heart was hammering in my chest, but to my surprise, there was no fear, just contentment and relief.
I could’ve sworn Lucas’ reaction to my words was anger, but I didn’t bring myself to care. He was inconsequential to me. I turned on my heels, and without sparing him another glance. I headed out of the cell.
“Get back here!” he screamed. “Daisy!”
I ignored him, not bothering to hide my smile as I made my way towards the car. It felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. My past was no longer weighing heavily on me and threatening to smother me.
I was free.
“Daisy!”
I paused when I heard Kai call out to me. He caught up to me easily, eyes roaming over me cautiously.
“Are you okay?” he asked and I nodded. “Are you sure?”
“I feel amazing. Kai.”
He didn’t believe me, that much was clear, but I’d never felt better. His gaze was wary, and in that moment, I realized just how fucking lucky I was to have him as a mate. What were the odds that he was the one I met when I ran? What were the odds that the goddess hand crafted him for me.
I’d allowed my past and need for revenge blind me to what I had right in front of me, and now that it was gone. I felt like a fool. The man in front of me was perfect. He cared, he worried, he was by my side even when I didn’t deserve it, and to top it off, he wanted me. He’d made that clear so many times.
I wasn’t sure if it was my raging emotions, or the mating bond finally being acknowledged, but I didn’t care that we were in the middle of the damp hallway and the smell of stale piss and blood surrounded us, I closed the gap between us, and standing on my toes, I kissed him.
He was taken aback for a second, but he didn’t delay to grip my hips and pull me flush against him. With one hand, he tugged my hair back and slipped his tongue into my mouth. I may have kissed him first but it was clear that he was in control.
The kiss was slow and deliberate. I poured in all the words I couldn’t bring myself to utter out loud Gripping the collar of his shirt, I tugged him impossibly closer. I wanted to feel his skin on mine, I wanted to blend in with him.
My wolf was doing fucking cartwheels in my head and my skin was alight with desire. I wanted to touch him, and from the way his hands gripped me, it was clear he wanted the same thing
I would’ve damned the consequences and let him fuck me right there, but the sound of someone clearing their throat caused us to break apart.
My chest was heaving and my lips were tingling. Kai’s shirt was askew, his lips swollen and his eyes dark.
“I didn’t mean to interrupt,” Damien drawled, not even bothering to hide his amusement. “Had I know that you were busy I would’ve kept the prisoner company.”
Kai muttered a curse under his breath before turning to Damier “You have five fucking minutes to give me a good reason why I shouldn’t kill you right now.”
Damien held up his hands in surrender and took a step back. “O second thought, maybe I should just go. Daisy, help me out here.”
I couldn’t help but laugh. “I think you’re doing good on your own

He shot me a look of pure betrayal before turning back to Kai. “The council reached out to me. They have questions… because of him. His pack is growing suspicious, we need to have plan.”
Just like that, I was quickly reminded that there was work to be done.
Kai ran his fingers through his hair. “I have to take Daisy home-
“I can drive, Kai,” I assured him with a small smile. “I’ll be good.
“Are you sure?”
I nodded. “Positive. Go do what you need to do. I’ll be at home.”
He hesitated for a moment before fishing the keys out of his pockets and placing them in my outstretched hand. I turned to leave, but he stopped me, his fingers wrapping around my wrist.
For a minute, we just stared at each other, neither one of us speaking.
“Lock all the doors,” he said finally. “Ask Scarlett to stay with you
“Kai-”
“I’ll feel better if I know that you’re not home alone.”
I sighed deeply. “Okay.”
We both went silent for a moment then he leaned forward and kissed me; a slow, drugging kiss that had my toes curling and my back arching. By the time he pulled back, I was burning for more, but he released me and took a step back.
“I’ll see you at home, princess.”
I rushed out, not saying another word, because I knew if I lingered, I’d do something stupid like throw myself at him. It was like someone had flipped a switch in me. I was attracted to Kai, that wasn’t news, but the hunger I felt around him… that was
new… very new.
Once I got to the car, I slammed the door shut, forcing myself to take deep, long breaths. As soon as I calmed down, I dialed Scarlett’s number.
