Judging by Kai’s assistant’s face when we walked out of his office it was clear I had that freshly fucked look.

I tried to tame my hair as much as possible and reapplied my lipstick, but it didn’t do much when Kai wasn’t even bothering to look presentable.

To be fair. I didn’t mind much, especially considering who we were going to meet. I’d never felt jealousy before, at least not to this extent. It was a weird and unwelcoming feeling. I couldn’t tell how much of it was my own emotion and how much of it was based in truth.

Other than throwing herself at Kai, there were no indicators that she actually liked him, and even that part could be explained by the fact that she may not have known he had a mate. He said they hadn’t spoken in over a year, so maybe I ought to give her the benefit of the doubt.

“I hate her,” my wolf said. “I want her gone.”

I couldn’t help but snort. “That’s a bit dramatic.”

“I don’t trust her, Daisy. She wants him, I can tell.”

“How can you tell?”

She was silent for a moment. “I don’t know, I just can.”

“I can’t ask him to send his childhood friend away because we’re jealous. It may have all been a misunderstanding. Just… take a break, okay?”

She grumbled a few choice words under her breath before finally agreeing.

The meeting rooms were on the third floor. It was a long hallway with numerous doors on each side. Kai led us into the first one on the left and pulled it open to reveal Eva standing alone inside.

Despite my wariness of the girl, I couldn’t help but feel bad. We left her alone to have sex. If I were in her shoes, I’d be fucking pissed.

She didn’t seem to mind however, she just sighed deeply when she saw us. “Finally, I was beginning to think you’d forgotten I was here.”

“Sorry about that,” I couldn’t help but mumble.

I felt partly responsible. If Kai hadn’t been so focused on trying soothe my jealousy, we never would have ended up.. in

his office.

“Don’t worry about it,” she waved me off. As we stepped further to the room, her nose twitched. “Don’t tell me you left me here for a romp in the office.”

Neither of us spoke.

She turned to Kai “You sly bastard. I have to say, I’m happy for you”

“See,” I told my wolf. “She doesn’t seem so bad. She didn’t reactegatively

“I still don’t trust her.”

I knew I probably wasn’t going to win with her so I shut the link between us and focused on the discussion happening in front of me.

I could feel tension brewing silently in the room and I began to wonder if I should be here at all 1 itched to run, and I probably would have it Kai hadn’t placed his hand on my back and led me into a chair. He sat next to me, his hand sprawled on my thigh

“Sit,” he said to Eva.

She hesitated for a moment before doing as he asked and taking he seat opposite us.

“This feels so formal,” she joked, but Kai didn’t laugh, he didn’t even crack a smile. “I suppose I’m in trouble now, aren’t I?”

“You’re not,” he said simply. “But I do need to know why you’re here.”

“Can’t I come to see a friend?” she asked, smiling softly, but Kai’s features remained impassive.

He just stared blankly until her smile disappeared and she sighed, leaning back into her chair with her arms crossed over her chest.

“The last time you left, you know what happened,” he began. She cast a wary look in my direction but Kai was quick to cut in. “I already told her what happened.”

To say she was shocked was an understatement. Her eyes widened to the point of saucers and her jaw dislodged.

“You must really like her,” she managed out.

“She’s my mate.”

He said it as if it were the simplest thing in the world and I couldn’t help the butterflies that erupted in my stomach. It was one thing for him to choose me in private, and another thing entirely for him to do so in public.

“I need to know that you didn’t come here with the intention of convincing me to change my mind,” he finished. “The timing is… convenient.”

“I came because I missed you, Kai. After what happened, I was hurt and I ran. It was stupid. I went for a year-long program outside the country. I only just returned a week ago. I just wanted to see my friend, that’s all.”

There was a flash of emotion in Kai’s eyes. It was clear that he missed her too. He tuned to me, a silent question in his eyes.

I was floored that he was asking me. I didn’t know her well enough to know if she was being genuine.

“He’s asking because he trusts you, Daisy,” my wolf snapped. “He knows you were uncomfortable with her presence earlier. He’s letting you make the choice.”

It was quite possibly the sweetest thing anyone had ever done for me. I felt a wave of emotion so thick in my throat that for a second I couldn’t breathe.
