Eva and I sat in the meeting room: the best friend and the mate. It sounded like the start of a cruel joke, but I had no idea what the punch line was.

“So, how did you two meet?” she asked, leaning forward on my elbows. “You’re not from here, and the Kai that I know doesn’t go around visiting other packs. Did you come here as an exchange student? Was it accidental?’

“It was… complicated,” I said after a moment of deliberation. “We sort of bumped into each other actually.”

It was clear she wasn’t buying my story, but that was the best she was getting out of me. There was no way I was going to tell her that our relationship started because I needed to get revenge against my former Alpha.

“You’re not officially mated yet.”

It wasn’t phrased as a question, but she cocked her head to the side and watched me, as if waiting for an answer. I shrugged and she hummed loudly.

“I’m surprised, I thought wolves liked to mate early, and Kai has always been a hopeless romantic, waiting for the idea of a mate. I thought he would’ve dragged you to the altar by now.”

She laughed to herself, but I didn’t crack a smile. I wasn’t sure if he was deliberately trying to pick apart my relationship with Kai or if she was just clueless, and until I found out, I was going to keep a tight rein on my emotions.

“Then again, every relationship is different,” she added. “He could just want to take things slow.”

“If you want to know his reasons, you’ll have to ask kai.”

I wasn’t able to keep the annoyance out of my voice completely, and she must have picked up on it because she sat up straight.

“I didn’t mean any harm, Daisy, I swear,” she said quickly. “I have my foot in my mouth half the time. I’m truly sorry.”

“No apologies necessary.”

She smiled widely before reaching out and grabbing my hands. Her grip on my wrist was tight, her hands squeezing mine as she locked eyes with me.

“I really want to be friends,” she whispered. “I don’t want mine and Kai’s history to get in between that.”

“What history?” I couldn’t help but ask. “You’re just friends, righ”

She smiled, but it didn’t quite reach her eyes. “Yes, exactly. I just want my friend back in my life, and as his mate, that makes you my friend too.”

Thankfully I didn’t have to respond to that because the door opened. Her grip on my wrist slackened and I snatched my hand back, folding it neatly in my palm.

“Daisy, are you-” Scarlett went silent as she looked between Evad I. “Well, Damien didn’t tell me that you had company.”

“Hi, Scarlett,” Eva said smoothly, leaning back into her chair. “Long time no soon.”

“Not long enough,” Scarlett mumbled under her breath before ning to me. “I hope you’re not too busy, we have to go over some things for the mating ceremony.”

I was about to ask what things when I caught the sharp look in her eye. It hit me in that moment that she was giving me a desperately needed mode of escape.

“Right,” I said, standing to my feet. “It was a pleasure meeting you. Eva, but I have to go.”

“I’ll see you around, Daisy.”

I waved and hurried out of the meeting room with Scarlett. I muttered a quick thank you to her, but she waved me off and led me into the elevator. Neither of us spoke until we got out of the building and into the car waiting outside.

“How did you get stuck with her?” Scarlett asked. “Actually, the better question is where the fuck did she spawn from? I haven’t seen her in forever.”

“She was in the office when Kai and I arrived. It’s been a very eventful morning to say the least,” I ran my fingers through my hair with a sigh. “I’m going to kill Kai.”

“He left you with her, didn’t he?” she asked and I nodded. “I love my cousin but he’s so fucking clueless sometimes. What do you think about her?”

I shrugged, not wanting to say anything.

Our meeting obviously played a part in the emotions I felt concerning her, but I was self-aware enough to know that I didn’t know her well enough to make a definitive judgment about her character.

“You may not want to say anything, but I will. I don’t like her, and while she’s here, I think you should be careful.”

“Why? What has she done?”

Scarlett chewed on the inside of her cheek. “It isn’t what she’s done per se, but she’s always had a thing for Kai. I don’t think she will do anything because no one is stupid enough to get between a lycan and their mate, but I think it would be unfair if I didn’t tell you.”

“But Kai rejected her, right?”

She snorted. “Since when has that ever stopped anyone?”

She glanced at me out of the corner of her eye and when she saw the horrified look on my face, she quickly backtracked.

“Relax, Kai would never tolerate any advances, the man is smitten. It’s probably my dislike for her talking”
