We met with the planner for about half an hour, then spent the rest of the day at the spa. It was the most relaxed I’d felt in a long time and considering everything that happened in the past few days, I think I deserved it.

We had lunch together at a restaurant in the middle of town. I had a few people bow to me as I passed. It was unsettling to say the least, but I’d get used to it at some point.

“So,” I drawled as Scarlett drove me home. “Are you going to tell me the lore between Kai and Eva, or am I going to have to ask my mate.”

She glanced at me out of the corner of her eye. “I don’t know if should. I already don’t like her and I don’t want to feed the bias.”

“If you don’t like her, there has to be a reason. Besides, I think I can form my own opinions about her. I just want to know what I’m dealing with.”

It was clear she wasn’t completely on board with the idea. She chewed on the inside of her cheeks, eyes fixed on the road. I waited patiently, knowing that rushing her would do me no good.

“She’s been around for as long as I can remember,” she began after a moment of silence. “There’s five years between Kai and I, but Eva has been in my earliest memories. Their fathers are friends and I guess she just stuck. She used to be really cool when we were younger, she played with me sometimes.”

“But?”

She shrugged. “I don’t know. I think she grew older and just didnt have time for me anymore. It doesn’t matter, people outgrow each other all the time.”

I groaned. “Tell me something useful, Scarlett.”

“Look, there’s nothing to worry about with Eva. Sure she’s had a crush on Kai since she was like sixteen-”

“She what?”

Eva went silent and turned to me, a wary look in her eyes. “She never confirmed it, I just assumed.”

“Did you assume or did you know?”

“Whatever it was, like I said, it doesn’t matter, Kai chose you. If he wanted to be with her, he would be. He never had any interest in her. Asking about her, hearing about her will only make you feel a certain kind of way. You need to keep her out of your mind.”

“Easy for you to say,” I mumbled. “There isn’t a hot lycan in love with your mate.”

The corner of her lips tugged up and she laughed out loud. I grumbled under my breath, hands crossed over my chest, and all it did was make her laugh even harder.

“You’re cute when you’re jealous, Daisy,” she mused. “If you’re so worried about it, I think you should talk to Kai. He’ll be able to assure you in ways I never will.”

I knew she was right, but I didn’t respond, there was no need.

We drove the rest of the way in silence and she dropped me off before disappearing down the road. There were guards stationed outside, weapons at their side. They weren’t there when I left the house and I made a mental note to ask Kai about

it once he returned.

I decided to watch a soap opera to pass the time, and it wasn’t unil the sun set and he still hadn’t returned that I began to worry. I called him, but to my surprise, he didn’t pick up.

Kai always had his phone on him, so the fact that he didn’t pickp worried me.

I debated calling Scarlett, but there was no way she’d know when he was, she spent the whole day with me.

I paced the length of the living room, waiting for him to return home. The longer I waited, the more worried I got. He’d never stayed out late before, at least not without telling me before. There was a strange tightness in my chest that I’d never experienced before. I’d felt worry, but never like this.

“Can you reach Kai?” I asked my wolf.

“I can’t.”

“You did once.”

“It took so much out of me, Daisy, I can’t do it again. It’s going to have disastrous effects.”

I let out a groan of frustration. “Can you at least tell if he’s okay?

“If you’re so worried, mate with him, Daisy. That’s the only way you’ll be able to reach him without worry.”

“I can’t mate with him until the next full moon. I need to get through to him right now.”

“I don’t know what you want me to say, Daisy,” she sounded exasperated. “Maybe if he marks you it’ll help. I don’t know what you want me to do. Why don’t you drive out and find him?

I was debating doing just that when the door opened, stopping me in my tracks. My head turned so sharply that I felt a crick in my neck.
