I didn’t close my eyes until the early hours of the morning. It was sheer exhaustion that had me passing out in bed.

The last thing I remembered was Kai’s head between my thighs and my teary cries as he forced yet another orgasm out of

My body told the tales of last night as I woke up. There was a slight soreness between my thighs and I was fucking exhausted. I glanced at the clock, frowning when I realized that it wasn’t even six yet. I couldn’t have been asleep for more than three hours.

I sat up slowly and that was when I noticed that Kai was missing from bed. The closet door was open and panic clawed up my chest instantly as I threw myself out of bed.

I checked the closet, my heart hammering once I realized that a box and some clothes were missing.

He was gone.

I should’ve known that he’d leave when I was asleep. Last night, we tried to avoid the topic, but I could tell he was just as worried as I was. It should’ve occurred to me that he would try to avoid the teary goodbye.

I didn’t even realize when my eyes began to blur. I wiped the tears away with the back of my hand, trying to calm myself, but nothing seemed to be working. There was no need for me to be crying like he was dead. He’d only gone to the next pack. I could call him, I could text him-

The sound of the door slamming open had me jumping.

“Kai?” I asked, blinking through my tears. “What are you doing here?”

“I fucking live here,” he mumbled, clearing the distance between us.

He was shirtless, his chest glistening with sweat. His grey sweatpants hung low on his hips showing a glimpse of his happy trail, but my eyes were drawn to his face. His brows were pulled together tightly and his eyes held worry and unease.

He lifted a hand to my cheek, stroking softly. “What’s wrong? I felt you panic. Are you hurt?”

I shook my head. “I’m fine, I just thought you were… wait, did you say you felt me?”

He nodded. “Yes, now tell me what the fuck happened.”

“Kai!” I exclaimed, barely able to hide my excitement. “Do you know what this means?”

He didn’t seem impressed or excited, if anything, he seemed a little annoyed. His eyes roamed over me, trying to look for any obvious signs of injury.

I grabbed his cheeks, forcing him to look at me. “You felt me. You knew what I was feeling.”

I saw the moment my words settled in his brain because it was like a light bulb lit up in his head. His eyes widened in shock and he took a step back, cursing under his breath.

“Does this mean I can mind link you now?” he asked and I shrugged.

“I don’t know, I’m a bit terrified to try actually.”

If it didn’t work, I’d be disappointed, not because of the mark, but because I’d have to wait a whole month until I was able to.

I focused on lowering my wall and reached inside of me towards the mating bond I shared with Kai. It was pulsing with much stronger energy now. I poured all my attention towards the other end of the bond. I focused on my mate on the other

end and spoke into the void.

“I really hope this works.”

At first, there was silent. Disappointment quickly built up inside of me as I realized it didn’t work. We could feel each others emotions, but the mark wasn’t strong enough to create a mind link between us.

“Hello, princess.”

“Kai?”

“The one and only, baby.”

I squealed, throwing myself into his arms. He laughed, arms wrapping around me as he easily lifted me.

“I thought it didn’t work,” I admitted. “I’m a bit surprised.”

“So am I.”

“Now I can talk to you whenever.”

“I don’t know if it’ll work like that.”

I went deathly still, worry swirling inside of me. “Why not?”

“Because it’s not strong enough. The mark was enough to establish a link between us, but until the ceremony is completed, the bond won’t be fully in place. Don’t you feel the strain? The pressure in your skull?”

I did.

I thought it was just a headache because I woke up too early. I had no idea it was because of our mind link. It was a dull throb at the back of my head,

“What does it mean?” I asked.

“It means we probably can’t hold a conversation for so long. As it is, the only thing keeping this connection is the mark. If you were an official member of this pack, we’d have the pack link, but this is all we have, and it’s a lot of strain on a mark.”

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed.

I broke off the link with him, sighing deeply. I shuffled to get out of his arms, but he wouldn’t release me. Instead, he walked over to the bed, sitting and placing me in his lap. I buried my head into his throat as his hands rubbed small circled over my back.

“So we wait till next month?” I asked and he hummed. “I guess isn’t that far.”
