My mate was an enigma, and while that normally would have annoyed me, I was intrigued.

She had a good poker face, but fortunately, I’d spent most of my life reading people. It didn’t matter how much she feigned indifference, I could see that the mate bond affected her as much as it did me, and she hated herself for it.

I wanted to push, wanted to rile her up until she admitted the truth, but something held me back. I still didn’t know the full story of what went down. I knew who hurt her, but I didn’t know how, and something told me that it was more sinister than anything I could think.

Her drive for revenge was intoxicating, and that kind of drive din’t just come out of the blues.

“We need to mate,” I told her and for a split second, she stilled.

Her breath picked up, and she swallowed deeply. “So you said, but how does that help.”

“If you want to hit the bastard where it hurts, then there’s no better way than mating with me. I’ve been at odds with your Alpha for years.”

“At odds is a nice way of saying you hate each other’s guts,” she sorted before finally looking at me. “Why though?”

“Why what?”

“Why do you hate each other?”

I was surprised she was asking. I thought it was public knowledge. I never hid the reason for my disgust.

“Your pack has broken a lot of rules, but they do it undercover and it’s hard to find evidence.”

“What rules?”

“They’ve been working with human hunters.”

She scoffed. “That’s not true. You must have the wrong person. They would never do that?”

“Really? How do you explain your pack’s wealth? They don’t own any huge businesses, and they don’t get the money from

us.”

I could see the wheels turning in her mind, but the disbelief was still there, as light as day.

I didn’t blame her though, I would have a hard time believing if omeone told me that my pack was involved in illegal things as well, but it was the truth. I’d been building a case against them for years.

“So you’re an advocate?” she asked.

“I’m the king, and it is my job to keep everyone safe. They are je pardizing the safety of the entire werewolf kingdom. Now, are you going to help me or not?”

She turned away from me, unable to speak.

I waited patiently for her to come to terms with all that I’d just sad, and while I did, I assessed her carefully.

Her eyes were heavy, letting me know she hadn’t slept much last night, and she sat stiffly, her hands folded neatly in her lap, almost as if she were trying to keep as much distance as she coul between us.

I bit back a frown.

I’d change that as soon as possible

“I don’t know if I’m the right person for this,” she said finally. “I don’t know anything about any hunters-”

“That’s what makes you the perfect person.”

“How? I already told you that I’m not going back there.”

“You’re not, they’ll come here.”

“I don’t understand.”

“You don’t have to. Just do as I say and I will sort everything out. Do we have a deal?”

There was silence for a moment, before a small nod. “Deal.”

As soon as the deal was made, she ran, leaving her untouched plate of food in front of her.

It infuriated me that she couldn’t feel the weight of the bond the way I did.

Everything in me ached to make her mine, every fiber in my being screamed out for her. It was like a burning in the center of my chest, but she couldn’t feel it. Either that, or she wasn’t allowing herself to feel it, and I had a feeling it had something to do with whatever happened at her pack.

“What did you do to her?” Scarlett asked as she made her way back into the dining room. “I saw her running down the hall.”

I ignored my cousin’s stern tone. “I need you to do something for me.”

“You’re going to have to do better than that if you’re going to change the subject.” She lowered herself into the chair next to me. “She seems terrified, Kai.”

“Do you think I don’t know that?” I hissed. “I need you to find out what happened at her pack. There’s a reason she hates Lucas, and I want to know what it is.”

Scarlett sighed. “Fine, but Kai, are you sure about this?”

“Sure about what?”

“Starting off your relationship on revenge. It’s not a good foundation. Look at you, you’re obsessing over her and she’s itching to be away from you. It’s not going to work.”

“I don’t care about it working.”

“Liar,” my lycan hissed in my mind. “You care a lot.”

I shut him out and turned to Scarlett. “Just do as I asked.”
